Come in if you have a small baby..

I didn't think I had a small baby, but at his 5 month weigh/measure it turns out I do.  He's only in the 15th percentile for both.  He was born at the 25th percentile, and stayed there at his 4 month weigh, so I am a bit worried.  We weighed him 3 days in a row with the same results on 2 different scales.  He's not grown in length at all and only gained a tiny bit of weight, in the last month.  Should I make an appt to see the Dr. do you think?

It was a real surprise to me because he's got at least 3 rolls on each thigh.  And DS1 has always been in the 75th for height so we assumed DS2 would be similar.

How little is your baby?  Have they always been little?

Re: Come in if you have a small baby..

  • At his 4 month appointment, Jack with in the 50th for height and 10th for weight.  The doctor wasn't worried about it because he's been following a curve.  I was concerned, like if he is in the 50th for height, shouldn't he be in the 50th for weight?  But the doctor said ideally he would be, but J is likely going to be a lean kid.

I don't know his 5 month stats and we don't have another appointment until 6 months.  I might measure him myself for height and weigh myself and then stepon the scale with him to see how much he weighs.  lol.  I'm curious.

  • Zoe started out in around the 95th percentile. She's now in the 8th. She was just under 13 pounds at 5 months, and was 9 pounds at birth. My ped is not concerned with her weight gain at all because she's healthy and happy and growing on her own curve now.

    Hi Kissyfitt!!

Monkeybabe this makes me feel better... Zoe looks perfect so I'm sure you're right.  She was probably working off her reserves this whole time;) and stretching out.  Mine was 7lbs at birth and now 14lbs.

  • DD was 7lb 6.5oz at birth and had a slow start at gaining due to feeding issues. She's growing now, but slowly and on her own little curve. At 4 months she was 12lb 6.5oz (5%) and 23.5" (2%). Her doctor isn't concerned at all as long as she continues gaining. She doesn't look thin or anything either. She has really chubby cheeks and chunky thighs. I'm sure your DS is fine, but I understand that it's tough not to worry!

Yeah, it freaked me out at first, but the pediatrician said Zoe's perfect the way she is. All my IRL mama friends have their babies doubling their birthweights and such and I'm like, "Uh... Zoe's no where near  17lbs 12oz." (her recorded weight at birth was 8lbs 14 oz, but she had already pooped all over the place, so the midwives said she was likely 9 even at birth)

  • DD has been following her own little curve! Going up slightly but never down. I think if you're concerned you should definitely see the pedi.

  • DD was 1st percentile so it is no surprise that DS is also in the 1st percentile for weight and 40th for height. He was 7lbs 3oz at birth but dropped to 6lbs 3oz before starting to gain again. He is now 10lbs 3oz and 25inches long. As long as your lo is growing according to his curve he will be fine. Remember that every scale is different and your doctors scale could be different from multiple other ones. The two scales they use at my doctors office both say different things! As long as he is happy and healthy I'm sure he is fine.

  • Both my kids are small and have always been small. My son is on the charts but "tiny". Like 1% tiny. He weighed almost 14lbs at his 6mo but that's a long way from 4lbs at birth! So doctor is happy. As long as your doctor isn't worried I wouldn't be. Are you and your husband tall?

  • Both kids started above the 97% at birth. DD was over 9 lbs (at 37 weeks) and DS was 10 lbs (at 39 weeks). DS was down to the 10% by 12 months old, DD hit the 10% at 4 months. She was 11 lbs 14 oz at 4 months. Both kids are well above the 97% for height. DS didn't double his birthweight until after 12 months, I'm not expecting her to double until after that. Pedi isn't concerned. All kids grow differently. My kids grow inches before gaining weight. My Pedi states they are growing just not the average growth.

  • DD is 1st percentile for weight and not even on the chart for height. 12 lbs and 22.5 inches at 4 months.

I feel concerned, but my pedi isn't so I'm trying not to worry. Me and my H are both small people.

  • We're in the less than 1%. But DS was a preemie... 2 pounds 4 ounces at birth. Now up to 8 pounds (probably 8.5 now... his last official weight was taken a week-and-a-half ago).

They grow on their own curve. Growth hormones have been mentioned to us, but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that!

  • This exact same thing happened to us, DD was at the 25th percentile until her 4 month checkup she dropped to the 15th. She was born 7 lbs 1 oz and was 12 lbs 5 oz at 4 months. The pedi was a little concerned because she dropped off her curve but honestly I am not worried myself because she is a really happy kid pretty much all the time, and she sleeps through the night. I feel like if she was hungry she would be waking up at night. But we were giving her 4 oz bottles of BM while I was at work and the doc wants us to up it to 5 which we have been doing since the appt. She just wants to make sure she's getting as much as she wants to get. She did ask us to come back at 5 months though to check up on her.
