BFers - my LO drinks 7-8 oz bottles

I asked the BF board a while back and I've followed their advice. Still, a 4 oz bottle is still not enough for DS. We offer a 4 oz bottle first. He uses the slowest flow nipple. DH switches sides with him and takes burp breaks. Even after the 4oz, which takes about 15 minutes - way longer than he is on the boob, he is still hungry. He is fussy and upset and showing strong hunger signs.

He doesn't spit up. The pedi told us he would spit up if he overate.

Could some babies just drink more than others? We haven't introduced solids yet. He will be 5 months on Monday.

  • A is only 4 months. I asked the pedi today how much I should give if I offer a bottle and she said 5oz to 6oz.

ETA: what time of day are you offering the bottle? The pedi also said she will drink more earlier in the day and less in the evening.

  • My LO drinks 6oz bottles.  It was a long stuggle to figure things out the first few months, because the LC told me that I should keep the bottles 4oz max...and any more was overfeeding, despite her crying and rooting after.  Well....I stopped listening to her, and with the encouragement of my pedi I started offering 6oz bottles each feeding, and she, and I, are sooooo much happier.  I can't keep up with her demands, so I'm supplementing.  She typically drinks all 6oz, but sometimes will only drink 5oz, and once she went up to 8oz.  I think all babies needs are different, and you just need to follow your instincts.  My LO is drinking about 28-32oz total all day.

  • DS takes 6 oz bottles during the day when I'm at work, and has for about a month now.

  • Mine takes 5 now and I'm thinking of increasing to 6. She has drank 6 before no problem. I'm sure she gets more than 5 from my boobs sometimes, especially when she gets a giant morning boob.

is that seven 8 ounce bottles = 56oz a day or 7 to 8 ounce bottles a few times a day?

what is the daily intake?  how often does he eat that?

It seems like a LOT but my DS did take overfull 6oz bottles for a few weeks, so I'm not totally shocked.  I am most curious about the daily total - his weight gain - and your ability to pump enough to keep up.

    This.

If he is drinking a lot total, maybe it is time to start the S-word (solids).

  • DD will drink a 7 oz bottle in the AM when I drop her off at the sitters in the morning. She then drinks about another 12-16 oz total for the rest of the day (not necessarliy in 7 oz bottles).

I nurse her at 6pm, 9pm and 3am so I imagine she gets about 30-35oz a day. She NEVER spits up!

This but he's been doing it for a couple of months now.

  • DS is five months. I work away from home two days a week from 7:30 to 4 and leave three 4 oz bottles of pumped BM while I'm gone. He typically takes anywhere from 9 to 12 oz. I nurse him in the early a.m. around 5 a.m. and then twice (on occasion three times) in the evening.

  • H never took more than a 5.5oz bottle. We started solids at 5.5 months because she was just too hungry and frustrated with my supply at the time I would get home from work. I would rather slowly intro solids at this age than feel pressure to pump as much as you will need to keep up.

  • Yes the thing is I can't pump 18oz in a day so if she did want 3 x 6oz I'm kind of screwed, freezer stash will deplete. However I wonder if her still waking at night for food might stop if I fed her more during the day... Hmm.

I can usually pump 14 or 15 oz at work.

Do you pump any other times? There is no way I can pump 20 +/- oz in a day for her feedings so I have to pump after she goes to sleep and in the mornings before she wakes up (this is weekends too). It's exhausting but I just take it day by day.

  • Often when I wake in the morning they are not very full due to the night wakings. If they are full enough I pump one boob while I feed her and get 4-5 oz then. But then I get less at work. If I pump at night there's nothing in there so I am spending 20 minutes to get an ounce or something.

I hear you. Somtimes I feel like I'm chasing my tail. But it's taken me 2 months now of trial and error and I think we finally have a good schedule down. It helps that she only wakes for one MOTN feeding.

  • It sucks because I know I make plenty for her. On days off I often pump 4-5 oz at some point and still she gets enough from me. But the pumping business is not natural so it just messes stuff up a bit I think.

Still though I'm so grateful to be able to pump enough, I know so many people who didn't get enough upon returning to work and had to introduce formula quickly after returning.

  • He will only eat that much for one, maybe 2 bottles a day at most. For example, he woke up at 6:45 and between then and just now when I got home at 3, he ate 2 bottles. One was 8 oz and the other was 7.5 - so 16.5 oz in 8 ish hours.

I am keeping up with his intake when I pump at work.

As far as solids go, we don't think he is ready quite yet, but they are on the radar. He can sit unassisted for a little while, but he is still topples over a lot. Also, his tongue thrush reflex isn't gone yet.

  • I'm right with you! I've been back to work 2 weeks. She has been taking mostly 5-6 oz bottles. Once even a 7 oz! I pump 4 times a day, but 2 of the times are really close together and the last time is not too long after the other two. Teaching schedule is what it is, though, so this is the best I can do.

Im able to pump around 12-15 while at work. I am dipping into my stash every day. I track of how many oz into my stash I am and then my goal over the weekend is to pump enough to catch up. It's frustrating.

She will be 5 months on Sat. I was hoping to hold out on solids until 6 months, but I'm thinking we might be starting sooner.

  • I've heard it depends on the daily total. My LO will take mostly 4-5 oz bottles and once a day he wants more, like 6.

he drinks about 25-30 oz a day and about once a week he will drink closer to 32-35oz

  • My standard bottle amount for Madison is 5 ounces but she only takes the occasional bottle for funsies while I'm out.  I do always leave extra in case she is still hungry and she has been known to drink 6.5 ounces.  I know first thing in the morning she has to be getting about 6-8 ounces from my engorged tatas but gets much less at later feedings.

  • Watch your food intake as well, lots of proteins and fats and lots of calories will change the content of your milk and possibly satiate in smaller amounts.
