Little man will be 2 at the end of the month and he is really starting
to show interest in the toilet. Whats the deal with the potty seat/chair
or an actual cushioned seat that goes on the real toilet? Is one better
then the other to start? Is there anything wrong with just using a step
stool for the regular toilet? Im clueless!!
Re: Another potty training question
I think it's just personal preference between the separate potty seats and the seats that go right on the regular toilet. When DS was a baby (we started really young lol) we liked the individual potty. It was easy to keep next to the changing table because I put him on it every time I changed him. It also gave him constant exposure to it since it was our in our living area.
Once he started jumping off it, we moved on to the cushioned toilet seat because otherwise he'd fall in. Now that's what he uses all day and I love not having to clean out a potty every time he goes.
DD (5 years old) from IUI in 2012
TTC 3rd and final!: IUI #1 in progress!
My DD has been PT for a month now. She is terrified of any public bathroom (and has been since she was very little). We use 2 baby Bjorn potties at home (we also have a big house so it is easy to bring it places in the house) that she loves. She actually does sit on the big toilet at home to pee from time to time. I would have loved it if she could have trained on a regular toilet from the get go but if I had to wait for that she would probably be 5. She finally started flushing the toilet a couple of weeks ago but is still terrified of public restrooms flushing. I was actually surprised she wanted to sit on the big toilet at home shortly after she was Pt (she still won't poop in it but I'm glad she is pooping on her potty and not needing a diaper just for poops). I have a travel potty that is a stand alone potty and can also function as a ring. It is pretty portable and great to have in the car. Recently I have taken D in a public restroom and have her use her potty in there. I figure with some time (and on her schedule) she will be ready to use the ring on the public restrooms.
At daycare they have the tiny toilets that she is comfortable with but would fall in those if she was not being held (or without a ring) so I think it will be a while before she will be able to sit on a regular toilet without assistance . She also isn't quite big enough to get onto the toilet by herself even with a step stool. She can easily run to her little potty and do her business on her own.
I think what you use is personal preference for both you and your LO. If you have a big or older kid the big toilet may be a good idea. If you have a peanut it may be helpful to at least have a potty so yor LO can have some independence as well. No right or wrong answer here in my opinion.
