I let mine fall off on their own. A few were still hanging around when I went for my 2 week checkup and my doctor said I could have removed them on my own if I was comfortable with it.
I was told that they would fall off on their own but if they didn't, I shouldn't leave them on forever. Since mine weren't showing any signs of falling off, I removed them 2 weeks after they were put on. (My strips were put on after the staples were removed at 4 days post-op.)
I lost a few but mostly kept them on until my 2 week check-up. I was too weirded out to try and pull them off by myself and was much more comfortable having the nurse do it. Some of them were coming off so I actually cut a few strips but overall left them. The nurse thought it was pretty hilarious but it made me cringe.
I was also told they would most likely fall off on their own. A few did after I would shower, but most did not. I think there were about four or five left at my two week appt, the doc just ripped them off. No biggie. He said I could have done it myself, but I didn't think about it at the time.
I'm an OB nurse and we tell people that when they go home, let them come off on their own but if they are not all off in one week that they should remove them. Be sure you are looking at your incision every day to make sure no signs of infection.
