(NBR) Did anyone NOT have their wedding dress cleaned (if they kept it)?

This month marks my 2 year wedding anniversary. My wedding dress is still hanging on the back of our spare room door in the David?s Bridal Dress bag. I always ?meant? to clean and preserve it. However time and life got in the way. However our spare room is now the nursery so I have to move it and want to have it cleaned and preserved. However the idea of spending any additional money on something other then baby right now makes me cringe. I do want to keep it but fear I can not do so in just the bag.

Thoughts? What did everyone else do?

Re: (NBR) Did anyone NOT have their wedding dress cleaned (if they kept it)?

  • It was always on my list to get it cleaned and preserved but I never got around to it, that was about 2.5 years ago.  I ended up getting a space bag and folding it neatly inside and vacuum sealing it just to keep bugs and moisture out until after all the baby gear buying is finished.

  • I sold my wedding dress immediately after wearing it. I can't keep stuff like that around.
  • Mine is stored in a closet in the attic - non cleaned or preserved, still bustled and definitely dirty.  My plan is to eventually donate it to one of those bridal fairs or to wear it for Halloween some year as a Zombie bride - that way it gets worn again at least 1 more time.

Ohh thats not a bad idea. I should try that. I just hope I get around to preserving it eventualy. However that is a great idea in the mean time. THANKS
  • I didnt clean mine, it's been over 2 years. I packed it in a trash bag in a rubbermaid tote up in the attic. I dont know what I plan on doing with it someday and didnt feel like spending the $ to have it cleaned.

  • Mine is exactly where yours is, but we've only been married 18 months. :)

I'm debating having my dress turned into a christening gown. I hate for it to just sit in the closet for the rest of my life and take up space, and it's not like I'll wear it again, right? I'm just not sure I can bring myself to do it...

  • I did a TTD session in mine on the beach and then rinsed it thoroughly and hung it to dry for five days (we went on a mini second honeymoon right after our TTD session so I hung it to dry in the walk-in shower for the duration of our trip). Then I boxed it as neatly as possible in a big Rubbermaid tub and it is now sitting in a corner in my laundry room. One day I might send it off to have it cleaned and preserved but I've just never been able to justify spending that much money on something I seriously doubt will ever be worn again.

ETA: We were married over three years ago and we did the TTD session two months after our wedding so it's been in that box for right at three years now. I haven't even pulled it out to look at it Embarrassed I figure I'll do that when we have a little girl and she gets curious about Mama's wedding dress Smile

  • I am worse than you. Nov 1 will be our 4yr anniversary and my dress is also hanging in the bag, never cleaned. I do plan on keeping it and do want to have it cleaned, but the expense of doing so just annoys the heck out of me. I will break down one of these days. I'm waiting to find a coupon for a wedding dress special. Being as the busy wedding season is almost over, I expect to see one soon.

This is all me, except I've been married and moved twice!  Each time we move, I think about it.  I would love to do "trash the dress" pictures at some point.  I would probably keep a piece of the lace or something, but don't know that I'm going to have it preserved anymore.

  • Our 2 year anniversary is in October and I am in the same boat.  We just moved and now I have to figure out something to do with it.  I love it - it's beautiful.  But what do you do with a wedding dress once you are married?  I meant to have it cleaned and boxed up a long time ago, but it is just such a pain to get it, take it somewhere and then pay so much for it - and then still have to find somewhere to store it.  Ergh!
  • Mine is stuffed in a box in my parents' attic. It is precious to me as my mom and I made it together. However, the cost to clean it incenses me. I got married in that dress 8 years ago. Now that I'm having a girl I think about it more often. I should probably see if it is salvageable. The only part that got dirty was the hem from dragging around on the ground.

  • I got married in a hurricane, and it was so muggy and gross out that I HAD to have mine cleaned if I ever wanted to look at it again. I should have also had my shoes cleaned... those look disgusting now.

I didn't know you could get it cleaned so far after your wedding. Though now that I think of it, I don't see why you really couldn't.

  • Yeah- I'm in the same boat. My dress is hanging in the closet of my old bedroom at my parents house and has been there for over 8 years now!  I've wanted to have it cleaned/preserved, but just never wanted to put money towards it, and it's really not a priority right now.  Hopefully I can get it cleaned someday. I don't really have any plans for it, but would still be nice to have it cleaned if DD might want it someday.

  • I just celebrated 5 years, I've worn it twice.  Once for the wedding and once for a trash the dress photo session.  I didn't trash the dress but I did go for a swim in it in Lake Michigan.  It's half crammed in a Tupperware box in the crawl space.  Not where a $3000 dress should be.   I like the idea of the vacuum sealed storage bag!!  Why didn't I think of that?!    I am hoping that either I will pass it on since other parts have been used in other weddings, or I might save the dress for material to make a baptism dress for my LO or a communion dress in the far future.

  • I didn't either!

Mine is in a bag at my parents house. Haha

It wasn't very dirty anyway, but I heard if you don't clean it pretty much right away it never comes clean.

  • I had mine done right away. I figured that I just needed to do it until I figure out what to do with it. I'd rather have the option later to reuse it rather than waiting too long and possibly having it be damaged or discolored. Mine had lots of lace and lace can yellow so that is why I did it right away. Now that I am having a girl I want to keep it around to turn into something for her at some point.

  • I pre-paid for the preservation when I bought my dress years ago, it is still dirty and in a garment bag in the attic. I should take it in.

I could've written this myself, except that mine is in my craft room, and other than moving most of the spare room stuff into that room now to make room for the nursery, it's not 'in the way' really. I don't know if I'll ever have it cleaned (unless someone else wants to wear it someday). Maybe it'll end up in a space bag someday, but don't ask me when that'll happen. :)

  • I've been married almost 6.5 years and my dress is still sitting in a bad in my old bedroom at my parent's house.  I do hope to get it cleaned someday but it is rather pricey.

  • We passed our 2 year anniversary in July and mine is still in the David's Bridal bag un cleaned. I aired it out once when we moved a year ago just to look at it, but then put it back in the bag and it's hanging in my closet. Not sure when it's gonna get cleaned, but you are not alone :)

  • I got married 9 years ago and just recently tossed my dress when we moved. I didn't get it cleaned at the time and IMO it was beyond saving at that point. Looks like I'm not having daughters (and even if I did, what would they want with my dress anyway!), so no real point to saving it. It was only $300 or so, so not like I tossed a $1,000 or more dress. I guess my point is, if it is actually important to you to save it and have a chance it will be in decent condition sometime down the road, get it cleaned sooner rather than later, b/c time flies.

Exactly!  My Mom saved her dress.  Then when it was time for me to start talking about finding a wedding dress, she laughed when I asked about hers.  She said, "why would you want to wear a trendy dress from the late 70s?  Pick out your own!".

Maybe not wear it, but I always thought it would be cool if my someday DD wanted a piece of it to make into her or make something out of for the day.
  • Still hanging in the garment bag it came in - not cleaned - maybe I'll get around to it someday especially now that we have a basement I could put it in. It is just so darn expensive.

  • My 3 year anniversary is coming up, and I still haven't gotten my dress cleaned.  I want to, just haven't got the money to do it.  I definitely needs to be cleaned though, the bottom is dirty from dragging on the ground, and I tiny small spot of raspberry sauce on it.  It's currently hanging in my mom's closet in her spare bedroom.

  • Mine is still in a crumpled ball on the storage closet floor, which is where I threw it the morning after our wedding.  Needless to say, it isn't cleaned.
