Online Classes

I noticed that some of you have taken online classes. The class I am teaching this semester (a second 8 weeks class) has turned into an online class because we moved about 150 miles away from the university where I was teaching!

I just wanted to know what you have thought the most helpful techniques and least helpful techniques of an online class are. What did you like/not like?

Re: Online Classes

  • The online classes I took that had a quiz or mini assignment due each week helped me make sure I was caught up with the reading and lectures

  • For me, I liked having it be open. Most people who take online classes are doing so because they work full time, have a child, or another commitment that takes up a lot of time. I had a class that would have random deadlines, EX: a test at 10am on Monday, an assignment due at 5 pm on Wednesday, a discussion at 3pm on Thursday. It's a lot easier to remember what is due when if it is always the same time, like..exams are open until 5pm, homework is due wed. by 5 pm, discussions start at noon and end at 5 pm. So that those with other commitments have more of a chance. Also, be understanding that technology problems do happen. Though, I've never had a teacher that was a hard as$ about that kind of stuff, all of them were understanding. Other than that, I think it's pretty straight forward. I hope this wasn't a bunch of rambling.
  • It needs to be flexible.  We have a calendar of all expected due dates.  For my one course we have 2 chapters, then a quiz, 2 chapters, then a quiz.  Like Trudy says it keeps you up with the material.  I also like what my one course is doing this semester which is having due dates be every monday and thursday for things.  That way you know already that nothing will be turned in tuesdays, wednesdays, and fridays.

If there is a discussion section on your online program (we use something called canvas) take advantage of that and have a mandatory discussion topic each week.  Also make it mandatory to comment on another students post.  This allows all students to work together even in an online setting.

    Good luck!

  • Also try to be very clear with expectations. It is hard not being face to face and having vague professors has let to me struggling with online classes
