I'm eyeing a Pottery Barn Kids one, but I'm not sure if I should get the preschool size or the small size. DD will be bringing a change of clothes, lunch/drink, and a folder to preschool.
Our preschool specifically requests not to get the preschool size because it is too difficult to get the artwork in with the lunchbox and any changes of clothes.

We got the preschool pack from PBK and it's small. It will work for DS for this year, but next year we will need to get something bigger. He keeps his extra clothes at school and carries his lunch box so there isn't much even in the backpack. It won't fit his folder that he brings home.
My suggestion, get one size bigger and keep it light weight.

I love these two beautiful children!
We have the PBK and love it, but it really isn't big enough, buy my little dude is SO small that he can't carry the bigger one, and needed the autonomy of his own bag, so I got it.

We got the smallest Lands End backpack. It's bigger than the typical preschool size back pack and can fit artwork, change of clothes and his bike helmet. And I love the lifetime warantee on it. It has held up so well.
I just got dd#2 the small one from Wildkin (not pre-school size... next size up) and I love it!!!! I feel like every single kid has the PBK one and this is still great quality, and so super cute and different!!
My son has the PBK small size and it is pefect. He takes a folder and lunch bag each day and then it still fits a sweatshirt and other art projects without being too big for him either. I came across a video on the PB website that went through each size and what it could hold and what it was recommended for. I found that to be helpful, as I almost bought the preschool size.
My aunt bought Charlie the PBK Darth Vader small backpack before he started pre-K last fall. It's a fine backpack, but I'm not a huge fan of PB. I'm glad she ordered the small, because the pre-k size wouldn't have fit the stuff that he comes home with.
ETA: If I had bought it myself, I would have gone with the LL Bean personalized ones.
I ordered my 3 yrold the Garnet HIll Jr. It's a great size and she can grow into it. It also holds a folder which is very important. Most small bakcpacks don't. Read the reviews. Good Luck.
I would not get the preschool one - this year my girls have ones from Target but we have used the small LLBean ones in the past and I love them. For PreK, My DD needs to keep an extra set of clothes, a sweatshirt and in winter, she needs to bring snowstuff although we leave that at school during the week. She will often have things to bring home at night so the tiny preschool ones just get really full.

The skip hop lady bug. It's so cute! It is preschooler size and would not fit a folder.
DD1 is on her second year of preschool, using a PBK size small. It has held up perfectly and still looks new.
It's big enough for a folder/artwork/paperwork, change of clothes, etc.
Skip the preschool size if you need something big enough for a folder.
