How do you handle issues with IEPs/schools?

My son was picked on all last year.  His IEP states regular ed busing.  The first day was today and a special ed bus picked him up.  I have documentation showing I also told the director of transportation about his IEP last school year.  I have already put in calls to special ed and transportation and will wait for their calls.  What more could I do?

  • Do you want special ed busing or regular busing?

I would recommend putting things in writing rather than relying solely on phone calls.  Even if they respond by phone, I would follow-up with something in writing saying, "I am confirming our phone discussion of X date where you said X."  The IEP is a legal document -- like a contract -- and they need to follow its terms until the team agrees to change it.

  • I put everything last year in through e-mails.  I have documentation telling them I expected regular transportation not a special ed bus.  I typically follow up all calls with letters because if I don't legally it didn't happen.  My son behaves well on a bus and has minor issues getting on/off.  They gave him an aid on a regular bus last year.  Out of the 3 years he's been on a bus he's had an issue once.  It wasn't a big issue and it was 2 years ago.
