Going rate for a babysitter

Ok, I use to make 2 an hour as a teenager babysitting 10 years ago. I realize costs have gone up. My husband and I are going out from 510 this Friday. Is 10 per hr acceptable? We don't want to scare away our only sitter we have.

  • Ok so the mobile version is not letting me use the dollar sign or dashes.

  • No idea what the going rate is, but I know I charged 10 in college, about 8 years ago. So it's probably at least that. I do think it depends on who the sitter is and how old they are

  • I would say $10/hr is good, maybe $12 if she is really good and picks up the house a bit. You can always ask what she charges and negotiate if needed

  • Honestly, I dont like anybody cleaning my house but me. My husband would love to hire a maid, but I just won't have it. She's an 18 year old hs senior. She agreed to the 10 per hour already, but I dont want to be cheap and scare her away.

  • I am paying $10/h for my sitter.

  • I pay our nanny $12/hr in Oregon.  When we lived in NYC (Brooklyn) the going rate for 1 child was $15/hr.  If your sitter is willing to take $10/hr, I say go for it!

  • oh man.  In Vancouver, apparently the going rate is $15-25!!! I have a feeling it's going to be a long time before I see a movie again.... Sad

  • $10/hour for a high school aged babysitter seems reasonable to me :)

  • 10$/hour is what I made babysitting in HS.

  • I think it must depend on where you live. I had a PT childcare job before DS was born just for extra cash and I only charged $8 an hour for a 5 year old and a 2 year old. Around where I live, I wouldn't pay any more than $5 an hour for somebody to watch DS, and our daycare lady only charges $1.50 an hour

  • We pay $10 for one, $12 for two and $15 for three. This is all for college age or older sitters. Dh will not let a high schooler keep the boys
