XP: silly, but feeling guilty..advice?

About 2.5 years ago, when DD1 was about 9 months old, we relocated from VA to CT. (A big move for me since I am from VA and all my family is there.) We recently bought a house here, which I guess makes things feel "real."

Anyway, lately I have been feeling a little guilty for living up here. I KNOW that's ridiculous, but I feel like my parents are missing out on DD2, since she grows so quickly. I am sure it's just related to her being so little and changing so quickly and not having a memory like DD1 does, who can also talk to them.

Anyway, like I said, i know it's silly to feel that way -- this move was necessary for DH's job (and I'm a SAHM). My family is also very supportive, but I know they would prefer us to live much closer.

Anyone else have this? How did you get over it?

  • I won't get into my moving story but yes I do know how you feel.  It is very difficult to relocate and yes it makes you feel guilty about not being around family.    I have a large family and I am now 6 hrs away from them.  It does however make those visits very special and you have to thank god for skype, msn and facebook to be able to stay in contact.

Staying busy is the key and try to call them as often as you can to just stay in touch.  It helps in those times where you feel kind of lonely. :)   Try to take more pictures so they can see the stages and changes or even some keepsakes for them in albums or videos etc.

I hope you feeling better about it soon ;)

  • DH and I have been moving around with the military for the last 5 years, so nothing really felt like "home." Now he is out of the service and we bought a house in Missouri for his work.  Both sets of our parents are in New England and DD is the first grandchild on both sides.  Of course all of us wishes that we lived closer to each other, but it's just in the cards right now.  To keep family and friends updated on her growth and different things we do with her, I keep an online photo album on Picasa that sends them an email notification when I add pictures.  I can also put up videos.  Using this website prevents having her pictures plastered all over facebook, something I'm not too keen about.

  • Thanks for the advice! :) We are lucky that we have a close family who makes just as much an effort to visit us as the other way around. And yes, Skype is wonderful. It helps to hear others' experiences. It sometimes feels like I should just be able to get over the feeling, but it's tough when you're so used to being around family. Until we moved, I had grown up in VA and lived there my whole life. Anyway, enjoy the day!
