DH and I are just beginning the adoption process and feeling a bit overwhelmed and excited by all of the options. Any advice for couples new to the process? We were told that we should plan to do our own outreach to find birth mothers (Youtube videos, newspaper ads, etc.) but we are wondering if we could be just as successful using the waiting parent books without all of the other "marketing" of ourselves? Also wondering realistically how long the process will take? We were told to expect 18mos-36 mos. Thanks for the help
Re: Any Adoption Process Advice?
Sounds like you are seeking an independent adoption (not using an agency)?
We have two babies we adopted independently... one was truly independent and one was via a facilitator.
I don't know much about marketing on Youtube and such but I can say that our DD1 came to us because an Ob/gyn kept a parent profile in her office and it made it into the hands of our birth mom.
Things I did to help our process along-- spent countless hours emailing lawyers and smaller agencies specifying our requirements and asking if they'd like to keep our profile on file... Many won't since you have to be a paying client but some will.
I explored facilitators and consultants (check to see if they are legal in your state) and I would spend time each day reviewing potential situations they were presenting.
I had a friend who mailed her profile letters to OB offices, clinics, county hospitals and social workers, etc. It was this mailing that resulted in DD1 (it was her letter but she'd already adopted so she sent the lead to me!)

Thanks, that did help!
We are using an agency but they still suggested doing our own marketing. It is about a year long wait to get into their waiting parents profile book.
Thanks again
We are using an agency and were told to expect a wait of 9 -24 mo. Month 3 since we were approved and we have not been shown yet.
My best advice is to make copies of everything. I have folders made with the date I sent stuff to our agency. I'm not sure about the outreach since our agency does that but good luck!
Hope you have some news soon
