Pulling up: On What? Ideas, Please!

DS would pull himself up to stand all day long if he could and be thoroughly content doing so. Problem is we don't have a whole lot of furniture on which he can do this!

We got rid of the glass coffee table for his own safety and have not replaced it with anything yet.

Suggestions? Our sofa has cushions that are too soft so he can't get a good grip on that and in his bedroom every piece of furniture is high or too unstable.

What are your LO's pulling up on? Anyone buy a toy specifically for this purpose? I heard about a baby table...?

  • The activity tables or exersaucers are good for that.  Also, we have a microsuede ottoman that he loved to pull up on, his high chair, our barstools (which quickly got hidden, because they topple over too easily), and the dog pen lol.

  • They make activity tables and I think that would be great. My daughter used anything that she could get her hands on but the table really helped her. Leap frog has a great one and so does fisher price.

  • We haven't bought a toy for standing up because I figured it wouldn't be long before she was walking. She stands up against our couch, ottoman, side tables, chairs at the kitchen table, her exersaucer, the door to our deck, the babygates. Pretty much anything.

  • i'm thinking of buying those cubes that have a tray on the inside. https://www.target.com/p/sheridan-espresso-leather-3pc-storage-ottoman-with-tray-plus-side-ottoman-seat/-/A-12732825

May also look into an activity table.  I'm in the same boat as you.  He keeps trying to pull up on the coffee table. We need to get rid of it.

  • DS pulls up on everything. The sofa, the ottoman, DD's toy grocery cart and a little car that is as tall as him. The stools in the kitchen, his high chair, the stairs. The dog:) I could go on!

  • We kept our coffee table and just got a soft cover for it, so he pulls up and cruises on that and the couch.  He pulls up on our bookshelves (tethered to the wall), dining room table chairs, the rail on our balcony, cabinets, his activity table, the ottoman in his room, our bed, the bathtub, his whack-a-ball toy...

+1  Or, a diaper box, also upside down.  The box for the super-economy Pampers Size3 is just the right height!  It's actually a little lower than the activity table, and I've found that it's better in the beginning because they need more leverage to pull up and the tables are too high.  And it's free ;-)  I personally wouldn't buy an activity table just for pulling up, it's a waste of $$ and space...in another month or two your LO will be bored with it!

  • We bought a $10 activity table from a resale shop. DD who is 3 plays with it as much as DS who does a drop-it dance move to the music. So fun!

  • Get an activity table. My 2.5 year old will still occasionally play with ours, so it's not just "an until they can walk" kind of toy. Ours does counting, abcs, colors, shapes, and also plays music. They're not that expensive and we've gotten a ton of use out of it.

  • We also have an activity table for this reason.  I found that eventually she figured out how to pull herself up on anything, so I bet the couch will work soon enough.  She pulls herself up on her diaper bag these days!

  • Thank you all for your great ideas!! He seems to be figuring it out all himself now pulling up on anything/everything. Activity table arrives tomorrow!
  • I have a small storage footstool from Target and filled it with hardcover books we had laying around the house. That's what he started using to pull up since it's a good 5 inches shorter than our sofa's.
