Would you let your mom be your surrogate?

I read this article this morning

And got to thinking, while I think it was very selfless of the mother to carry her daughter and son-in-law's child when the daughter couldn't, I'm just not sure I would be comfortable having my own mother carry my child.

Um... NO, for so many reasons not the least of which is that she is 64 years young and has 2 artificial knees so carrying a baby just would not be physically a good idea for her.

If she was physically capable of safely carrying and delivering the child, yes. Why not? although my mom died when I was ten so maybe my answer would be different if I had experience with an adult mother-daughter relationship.

If she were physically and mentally capable and willing, I wouldn't give it a second thought, absolutely yes. But then again, I am blessed with an amazing mother.

I'm happy it worked out for the people in the article, but I can't imagine most 61-year-olds would be good candidates to be a surrogate. I don't see this becoming widespread anytime soon.

No, but I wouldn't choose for anyone to be my surrogate. My plan was always to adopt in the case that I was unable to get pregnant or maintain a pregnancy on my own.

Before anyone gets offended, let me go ahead and clarify that I do not judge others for choosing surrogacy or other methods of fertility. It just was not the route for me.

I suppose if I was open to surrogacy, that I wouldn't take issue with my mother doing it for me.

I feel the same way.

With that being said, if one of my children struggled with IF I would be a surrogate for them assuming I was physically able to.

Possibly. I have a young mom so that helps. I would worry about it changing our relationship though. However I would have asked my sister in a heartbeat if I had needed a surrogate.

probably not. i just think it would end up being strange. if not for me and my mom, then probably for dh and future lo.

but i really try not to judge. everyone is different...

No way. She is still young, but we just don't have that great of a relationship. I'd worry that her special brand of crazy would somehow creep into my child. I'm just not willing to take that kind of risk.
