Parenting after a Loss

Teeth grinding?

Pip just got her upper front right tooth. (or is it left?)  (Well, it's on the right when you're looking at her).  Anyway, it's the first tooth that has another tooth directly below it - and she's just discovered that she can grind the two together to make a really awesome sound.  I know they're only temporary teeth - but since they'll be around for a couple more years I'd like for her to take care of them by not grinding them into dust.  Has anyone else had experience with this - or how to stop it?  I'd ask our pedi - but he seems pretty useless these days...

Re: Teeth grinding?

  • I'm afraid I'm pretty useless on this topic too but I just thought I would let you know that I share in your pain.  DS has been doing this for months now, and it is a horrible sound.  He doesn't do it nearly as often as he did in the beginning, so maybe you'll consider that at least a little bit encouraging?  At first, we stuck a paci in his mouth to try to get him to stop but we eventually decided we needed to get used to the noise and let him get it out of his system.

One other tactic I've tried is to pat his lips with my finger and playfully say "stop that" which makes him open up his mouth so he can try eating my fingers.  It's sometimes a short lived break but other times he'll get distracted after I pat his lips, and won't go back to the grinding.

Sorry I don't have much helpful advice.

  • If she just got the upper tooth, the novelty might wear off soon.  E got both of her top teeth within days of each other, and it seems like she immediately also discovered she could grind them together.  The sound was horrible and I still cringe thinking about it!  But thankfully, after about a week she quit doing it, and she hasn't done it in weeks.  I don't know if she forgot, if her teeth came in far enough that it is no longer easy to grind them, or if she just got bored with it.  lol

But either way, there is hope your LO might stop soon.  Good luck!  Smile

  • Thank you ladies!  It's good to know that it won't go on forever - I can't believe how awful the sound is - like fingernails on a chalkboard!!

  • Both my girls grind their teeth. As did I. The dentist said they don't know why exactly they do it. It's very common for kids getting their baby teeth or getting ready to loose their baby teeth to grind them. It is a horrible noise though isn't it.

  • DD grinded her teeth too but she eventually stopped.  Her pedi and my dentist said their kids did it as well and not to worry about it and just ignore it.
