Flying...What to do with car seat

So Dh and I are taking DD on her first trip. We get to check in her car seat for free but I just don't like the idea of just letting the airlines throw her car seat somewhere. I'm thinking of throwing it in a big garbage bag once we get to the airport....I really don't want it to get dirty....help Huh?

  • Trashbag isn't a bad idea. Funny enough, we're also taking a trip this weekend where we're gate checking the carseat. I am more worried about the possibility of them throwing it around, but we didn't have the money to buy DS a seat of his own.  Considering how he's been acting lately anyway, he'll be happier on my lap.  I can always wipe out the carseat once we reach our destination.  Perhaps you could do the same.

  • I've done a bunch of flights now with LO on my own. Skycaps are my new best friends. I check the car seat curb side and check in without the hassle read meltdown inducing wait of standing in line. The skycaps always in my experience have the heavy plastic bags to protect car seats. The counter ladies not so much. Totally worth a few bucks.
I use the stroller in the airport To tote all our gear and then gate check it. One series of cancelled flights/ day spent hauling all my gear and LO from one gate to another and I will never surrender the stroller again before stepping on board. I bring a heavy duffle to protect it. There is usually another mom wrestling a stroller at the end of the jetway to hand LO off to while I bag it.

  • We flew 4x last month, we gate checked stroller and car seat, that way we had it up til we got on and right away when we exited the plane. If the plane isn't full you can take LO on in the carseat which is nice. Of course if you are using a convertible carseat it might be easier to check it with luggage, in which case I'd prob just use a trash bag. We were/are still using our travel system with the interlocking infant carseat.

  • I got a carseat back. That broke and they broke the base too. Punks

  • We didnt have to worry about a carseat when we flew because the family we visited had an extra so I dont have a ton of advice.

I have heard however that garbage bags rip so they might not be the best option. I know some carseat companies make these bag thinks for your carseat. And as a PP mentioned some let you check it right at the plane and give it to you right when you get off the plane, maybe you could call and ask about that.

  • We just got back from our trip.  It was no problem to gate check the carseat.  I'm sure it got thrown around some, but it didn't get any dirtier (in fact, I'd almost say they knocked some of the ingrained crumbs and dust off).  I know it would've gotten thrown around more if we checked it when we got to the airport.  So even though we didn't need it during the layovers like I thought we might (airports are too exciting for naps), I'm glad we gate checked.
