Baby wearing takes practice?

DS doesn't necessarily enjoy being worn! He is 3 weeks and we have the moby. He sits in it comfortably for a while then gets irritated. He feels very supported and I always keep a hand on his rump or behind his head. He loves to be held and to fall asleep being held or rocked, which I am happy to do, I just appreciate the convenience of the carrier...especially when I want breakfast!

I guess my question is did your LO take to the carrier right away? Did it take a few attempts for them to get used it? What was your experience with baby wearing?

Re: Baby wearing takes practice?

  • My dd got super hot and sweaty after twenty minutes or less in the Moby. It made her really cranky, understandably. We switched to an infantino and she could hang out in that all day, but I didn't find it till about four months old, so I don't know how it would work with a tiny baby.

  • I mainly used it for naps, so would only put them in it when I knew they were sleepy - I made sure to nurse and put on a clean diaper first, and then pop them in. DS2 took to the carrier a lot faster, but DS1 took some time. We would go for walks right after putting him in, bc the movement would help him chill out.

With both of them, I would move around - rock, sway - and sing/hum until they fell asleep or really relaxed. Then I'd go back to whatever I needed to do ;).

  • Evie got SUPER hot in the Moby we used an infantino when she was older and she was the same as  PPs baby and was fine and loved it. Maybe see if hes too hot or try more skin to skin see if that helps! GL

  • It does sometimes take some getting used to!  Movement is VERY key - many babies are not content to be worn unless movement is involved.  Sitting on an exercise ball is great if you need to sit because you can bounce and sway slightly.

How are you wearing him in the moby?  If you are wearing him with his legs tucked, I would try wearing him legs out (the wrap will scrunch to fit) - the moby directions call this the "hug hold" but you can also do the "front wrap cross carry" (youtube has videos for it or there are some in my siggy link).  Many babies do not like to have their legs restrained.  If heat is an issue, that will be cooler for him as well.

  • DD HATED all of our carriers (including the moby) until we got the k'tan. She absolutely refused to have her legs confined in any way, and I think that was the bulk of the problem (she also stopped handling swaddling after her 2 week growth spurt).

While searching for a carrier that she would be OK with, I did have a lot of people tell me that sometimes their LOs would start out fussy and then get used to being worn (so if he's just sort of complaining, you should try to push through it until he settles. But if he gets super upset, then definitely take him out). I also know that sometimes you have to be moving around a lot and quickly the first few times.
