I find DS not ready for bed until 8-8:30 when he has been awake since 1! Its freaking me out a little bit. But if we try earlier he just plays in his crib but when we put him down at 8:30 it takes like 5 minutes
DD (16 months) sleeps 7pm-7am and naps 12-2:30, I know for her that would be far too long of an awake stretch but each child is different. How much day/night sleep is he getting?

Every baby is different. If he's happy and otherwise adjusted, I'd roll with it.
My LO gets up about 530ish and sometimes has a nap about 9. If not it's 1pm before she wants a nap. It's about 8ish hours. Seems long but she's happy so I don't change it.
She does however go to bed a little after 630 and sleeps REALLY well.
My LO has always had long awake times even from birth. She never did sleep hours a day.
If she does get really crabby I'll let her cuddle with a blanket and a bit of Baby Einstein or let her look at books in her crib. The downtime seems to be more helpful than a nap for her.
My LOs bedtime is 8:30, if we try for earlier it ends up being around 8:30 anyway so I don't even try for earlier anymore. He does nap in the afternoon till about 2:30 but on days when he gets up from his nap early, bedtime doesn't really change. If he is happy and seems rested I wouldn't worry about it.
I personally love the 8:30 bedtime. LO gets to see his dad and I get to sleep in (7:45/8am wake up) most mornings. Most of the toddlers I know seem to go down before 7 but they are up around 6. I don't function very well at 6am.
This is pretty similar to us. LO goes down right around 9 pm and usually that means she's been awake for about 7-8 hours.
A gets up from his nap between 1:30 and 2 and goes to bed between 8 and 9. It's generally closer to 8, but he generally plays in his crib for 30 - 45 minutes before falling asleep most days.
DS gets up around 7am, naps from around 12:30-2 (not that whole time though) and goes to bed at 9. After coming home from daycare and being with us, he is just too wired to go down any earlier
Since 9 months my guy has been getting up about 7, nap 10-1130 and bed around 8. I tried to fight it, but it didn't work. Sometimes it seems like he needs a second nap at 430 or 5, but then he never goes to bed. I was really surprised because as a younger baby he napped soooooo much more than babies of friends.
Right now I think she is transitioning to 1 nap. Her longest stretch is between her morning and afternoon nap--usually goes 5-6hrs. But when she wakes from her afternoon nap, she is still tired and cranky. So I think she just wants to go to bed but isn't quite ready to stay up a little later in the morning to push back her morning nap.
The longest DD can go without being completely miserable is about 4 hours. That does not stop her from fighting the nap and sometimes staying awake for 7 or 8 hours until bed. Those days are not fun.

Have you seen my monkey?
She is currently transitioning back and forth between 1 nap and 2. On days when she only takes 1 nap, She has a 5.5-6 hour stretch of awake time.
On 2 nap days, her longest stretch is about 4 hours.
