almost 4 months old- still rare smiles!

Hi all,

My son is almost 4 months old and he is still rarely smiling and is certainly not yet at the laughing stage.  Anyone else have a similar thing? He will smile occasionally, like maybe once or twice a day, but thats it, its not like I can make him smile just by making silly noises or by playing with him, the smiles that do happen are few and far between. All the websites say that babies should be smiling all the time now so I was wondering if anyone else had something similar (and yes, I am going to speak to the doctor about it at his four month check up and also did at the three month check up so they are aware of it!)

  • I think that smiling some is a really good sign. Hallie is laughing now but I read it's common not to happen til 4-5 months... Remember all babies are different. You're doctor may want to do some additional evalations, or maybe not, but try not to worry. Was your baby early at all?

  • Sounds like your little guy is a bit behind in this one area, but is he on track in other areas?  Its okay to be slow in some and average in others, they'll all get there eventually!  Maybe he just has a serious personality.  :)  If he is lagging in many areas then your doctor will probably keep an eye out to see if something else could be up.

  • Thanks for the responses! My son was 3 weeks early, and that was comforting at 3 months old haha, but now that he is 4 months old, he is still behind in this area even if we adjust the 3 weeks!  But yes, he is generally okay in other areas, especially movement, rolling, etc. I guess I will just have to keep waiting-- its just so sad when strangers stop to look at him and smile at him and he just stares at them with this frown bored face back haha.

  • My daughter smiles a few times a day, but like you said, is no where near laughing.  I've been getting updates that say, "your baby should be laughing a lot now"  or "you should be hearing lots of babbling with consonants by now"... Both of which my daughter isn't doing.  I fretted a little about it at first, but lately just have taken the mentality that every baby is an individual.  I wouldn't worry about it too much.  I am going to mention it to our pedi at our 4 month appt.
