Book Club

Can anyone recommend any good books to read? It's my turn to choose for my book club.

Would anyone be interested in starting a book club on here?

  • Yes please let us start a book club! I never can find stuff to read. Although my local library sucks wang and I might not be able to fully participate.
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • The new moms group in my area is reading Garden Spells for a book club.  Haven't started it yet, but I have heard it is good.  And that would be a lot of fun to start one here!
  • I would LOVE to start a book club on here.

  • I just started reading Mermaid. It might suck, so I don't have a review. Has anyone read it?

  • I really think we should start a book club on here. I am horrible about reading and would love to read more. I just get sucked into TV...so if I have a reason to read or keep up with something. I would love it!

ETA: I finally started 50 shades...and it is addicting...and I am ashamed to say I like it.

Also, I just bought this book for my kindle because I heard it was really good:  https://www.amazon.com/Gone-Girl-Novel-Gillian-Flynn/dp/030758836X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346870421&sr=8-1&keywords=gone+girl

My book club is reading We Need To Talk About Kevin

That was a hard book to read. I cringed alot.

I haven't read it yet, but will check it out and all the other suggestions, thanks!

I am down for a book club on here as well! I also watch way too much TV and I really love reading and need to get back into it.

Should we do like a book a month to give us plenty of time?

  • Damaged, by Cathy Glass. Kind of like the Glass Castle. Oh my gosh, so freaking sad and heartbreaking. And I'm all for a book club!

I just finished Gone Girl and it was so good! I recommend you put down 50 Shades and read that!

I think a book a month is a pretty good time frame. Ill help organize it, if you want the help!

  • I know I'm new/not well known, but I would LOVE to be a part of a book club here.

I'm currently reading The Hangmans Daughter. I would recommend The Glass Castle as well if you haven't read it, it's great.

Under The Banner of Heaven is an interesting read-especially nowadays during this heated political time.

Also, a memoir called Tiger,Tiger *warning* about sexual abuse and very disturbing. It was very hard to read because of the sensitive material but It was fascinating. I give mad props to the author for writing candidly about her story.

  • My book club just finished "Saving the World' by Julia Alvarez.  It was thought-provoking fiction.  My all-time favorite book club selection was "Dirty Secret" a memoir about hoarding that was absolutely fascinating.

Like PPs said, The Glass Castle is incredible, if you haven't already read it.  If you want something lighter, I really enjoyed Garden Spells, too.  They couldn't be more different!

Note, I read all of these before LO was born.  I'm reading my second book since he arrived now...ah, how life changes.

  • Do you think we should start in October since September already started?

In the meantime, maybe next week or so, i can post a thread on which book we should read, and we can vote?

    Just Brainstorming.

  • I'm just going to jump on board for the book club idea!

Sure, I like the voting idea. Lets post a vote next week for an October book. Should we make it like the photo contest where we gather nominations and then vote or is that too much? Or we can just compile a list of people involved in the book club and draw a name out of a hat and they can choose for that month?

Thanks Jacka, I'm not very good at organizing things, plus I work during the week (well, I'm supposed to be working!!) so I don't know how much extra time I'll have to organize.

  • Np! I will do this on my lunch breaks. i actually like both ideas. Maybe i will do a CP on how we should come up with the book titles!!

  • Count me in for the Book Club! I organize one where I am now, so I can tell you that the more options there are, the harder it is. When will the discussion be? During the weekday, weeknight, weekend? I loved Gone Girl. One of the best books I've read all year.

Good Questions. I am thinking that we should do one weeknight per month. Say the first monday or tuesday of very month, so the first discussion would be November  5th or 6th at 830 PM when the LO's are sleeping. Maybe not the 6th since that is voting day, but something like that?

We could just have the discusson up all day, or until it dies out, like the FFFC or UO.

  • Jessica Valenti has a new book out which I think would probably create a lot of buzz and a really great discussion, particularly on this board:

  • Count me in for book club! I need to find some good reading material... all I read lately are the .99 cent romance novels.... Big Smile
  • I'm in for a book club! I love reading, but it can be hard to find time now. :) Let me know if I can help organize or anything.

I've recently read Divergent (a YA novel), and I really enjoyed it. I'm not reading the second book of the series, Insurgent. Little Bee is a good book and I could see it being good for discussion in a book club setting.

  • Glass Castle was fabulous!

Gone Girl is on my list.

Currently reading 11/22/63 it's AWESOME so far!!

  • I'd be in for a book club! And amazon sells books pretty cheap so we could buy through there. Alsooo.. if I'm remembering correctly, Sams Club/Cosco sells gift cards for Amazon like a $50 card for $40 or something. If we all went in on it we could just have one Amazon account and ship books to everyone. Just a thought.

You can also get ebooks free from most libraries. You can download the nook or kindle app on your phone or laptop if you don't have an ereader or tablet.
