Conversation

If you have a child that is 4 years or older, how clear are their conversations...?

Some family members have commented that they don't always understand DS when he talks. I don't really think it's a speech problem, more that his conversations are so scattered. It's kind of like walking into the middle of a discussion and you have to pay really close attention and try to figure out the context. For example, this morning he started talking to me about a sheep and a princess, a ruby, a frog...I was completely confused until I realized he was talking about an episode of WordWorld that he watched the day before. DS is very into imaginative play, too, which is great...but sometimes he makes up stories and I have no idea what he's telling me. I understand the words, but I have to concentrate as if I was trying to solve a math problem..."I built a house and then there was a truck...and money for the grocer...and the horse's bed doesn't go there...so I have to get more blocks from California! Right mommy?" Umm, what?!?

Anyone else experiencing this...?

Re: Conversation

  • To me DD sounds perfectly clear and put together. Sometimes I have to ask her to repeat, or ask where she saw/ heard it and I understand. I think others may not get it as quickly, but I also have a better reference.

Hes probably just imagining faster than his brain to mouth can keep up. If you can understand regular conversations, I wouldn't worry about it. It will all click soon.

  • Dd is very clear, but she has been very verbal since age 1. My nephews however, have been slower with their language skills, even at age 4 and 5. One nephew even had some speech therapy and he got way better. Every child is different, maybe look into speech therapy?
