Hi all,
I have the Beco Gemini and I've been trying to use the hip carry lately. It know it's hard to diagnose without a pic but maybe there's some common mistakes you know about? The straps are digging into my neck, and DS seems a little lopsided, like one leg hangs out more than the other. It just feels awkward which is weird because that's how I carry him in my arms. I think he likes it better than facing in and I want it to work! TIA!
Re: Beco hip carry help
Honestly, it's probably just the fact that buckle carriers don't do a great hip carry
The lopsided part is easy to fix - just stick your hand in the carrier under his bum and shift him to center him better. The strap part...likely is just the fact that buckle carriers make an awkward hip carry but maybe someone who has used the gemini can give pointers.
Have you considered getting a ring sling for hip carries? You can get a good basic sling for $30-50 and it makes a MUCH more comfy and easy to do hip carry!

I just got a Scootababy carrier and its great for hip carry. If you end up getting another carrier, you should try it. I had never heard of it before until I researched ones especially for hip carry. We love it.
Hmm, I hadn't thought of the ring sling for hip carries, but I was just wondering about one for nursing. How big can babies be in a sling? DS is 17.5 lb, and the days I'm home with him he just wants to nurse and nap on me. It would be nice if I could let him do this in a sling while I move around the house and yard, but I was afraid maybe he was too heavy already for that to be comfortable.
Thanks, I'll look into it!
I've worn my 35 pound 3 year old in a sling before - I don't find it as supportive long term as a two shoulder carry but it can be plenty comfy! Most people find linen or wrap conversion slings more supportive than an all cotton sling.
You can nurse in the beco by loosening it and dropping baby down level with your breasts. I personally find nursing easier in a RS but it can definitely be done in a buckle carrier. In any case, I think a RS is a nice tool to have because they are so quick and compact
If you do want a dedicated buckle hip carrier, the scootababy is a good option.
