Anyone have experience with molluscum?

LO has had this for a while now.  We took him to a dermatologist about 6 months ago who prescribed benzoyl peroxide.  It didn't do anything.  I won't try it again either because it contains parabens.

I am now treating it with a natural remedy - Dr. Wheatgrass spray from Amazon.

This appeared to be working when two turned red and went away but now he's worse than ever - it's all over his belly and a few on his back too.  It started on his neck and they are still there.

Any information/remedies on this are greatly appreciated.  I am not open to freezing or burning them off.

Thank you!

Re: Anyone have experience with molluscum?

  • DS had 2 spots when he was an infant. Our ped recommended swabbing with listerine 2-3 times a day. 3 reasons - it dries up the area, it disinfects the area, and it irritates the area enough for the body's natural defenses to kick in and help fight the virus. It took a few weeks but eventually went away and we didn't have any spreading.

  • DD had maybe 6-8 of them on the back of her knee for about 6 months.  I asked the pedi about it at her 24-month well visit.  He first recommended smothering them with duct tape (would suffocate & kill the virus), but she had a reaction to the tape adhesive.

So we went back and he treated 2-3 of the bumps with some kind of liquid (sorry - don't remember the name of the medication).  This caused several blisters on the back of her leg, which took about a week or so to heal.  I could tell they bothered DD at first, just the way any blister would bother you.  But now, two months later, all the bumps are gone and her leg is healed back to normal.

It sounds like you're looking for something natural.  My pedi said the duct tape only works if the bumps are localized, because you have to smother every bump.  Treating a few with that liquid caused all of them to go away - but that may not be as natural as what you're looking for. GL!

  • Lurker on this board, but DS has had Molloscum for over a year now in his diaper region.  I've done a ton of reading on the "natural" remedies, and they do include the duct tape solution, in addition to Tea Trea Oil.

We took DS to a pediatric dermatologist and he gave us a prescription for Aldera.  I just can't bring myself to use it because it effectively causes the bumps to get all painful and gross....but that's what it takes to get them to go away.  When they are *** and look infected, then you know the body's immune system is starting to kill them off.  Unfortunately, it's taking a really long time for us.  :(
