This will be a post and run because A has been crying for an hour now, and I think it's time to give up for today, but does anyone have any tips for nap training a toddler? She decided about a week ago that our normal routine was not working for her anymore, and now even if I nurse her to sleep, she wakes up if I try to put her in her crib. I know I need to get rid of the nap time nursing session anyway, so I guess I need a new nap routine. What is yours? Has anyone had to re-train their toddler to take naps recently? Any tips? How many days in a row of crying for the whole hour should I expect before she finally starts sleeping again? I am losing my mind.
Re: Nap routines
Does she have a lovey or stuffed animal or blanket that she likes to sleep with? Maybe that would help.
I am home for weekend naps. But I really keep him active in the mornings. We are outside a lot. Then it's lunch, new diaper, some down time......and then I literally just put him in his bed. I say see you in a few hours! It's been like that since month six. I would not budge if I were you. Nap time is nap time. She will eventually sleep. At this age you cannot give in
**lurking on this thread** We do really well with naps - we eat lunch, I rock him for five minutes, he goes to sleep and wakes up 1-2 hours later! I'm lurking to see if I can find solutions for bedtime!! Nighttime is like a really bad episode of Super Nanny at our house. There is screaming and carrying on, some sleep, and then getting up a million times before mom and dad give up and let him sleep in our bed. Sigh. We stink at it. So, feel better that even though some of us have naps down, bedtime is another story.
We:
Change diaper
Put on Jammies, get lovey
Read 23 books
Sing nighttime song
In crib
Like pp I would reevaluate nap time... Maybe push a bit later. But I also wouldn't give in. For us it usually takes a couple days to get back on track, but if you have been nursing to sleep, it might take a bit longer.
Our initial nap training to cut out the pacifier took 8 days. That was at 56 months.
It sounds to me like she might me going down a little too late. We get up at 7:30 and after breakfast and playtime she's usually begging for a nap around 10:30. She typically wakes up between 3-4pm.
Our nap time routine is pretty loose. We play until she starts showing signs of exhaustion and then I ask her if she's ready to take a nap. She says yeah and runs to her room, then I change her diaper and pop her in the crib.
She naps between 10:30 and 3 or 4 every day? Wow! I've never heard of a toddler getting so much daytime sleep. How much nighttime sleep does she get? I'm crazy jealous!
