Re: CPW: Car Insurance

  • Before I married DH, I had Geico, and yes, it was because of their commercials.  I know it's stupid, but sometimes when I see an aweseom advertisement, I want to buy the product in hopes that the people behind the ad get some sort of credit.  Hey, I said it was stupid!

If they were really expensive, I would've picked something else, but it seemed reasonable, so it was NBD.

Now we have the insurance (American Family) that DH has had, and his parents have had, for many, many years.

  • Listen closely to the commercials....they all say something along the lines of "Drivers who switched saved xyz" Most people aren't going to switch UNLESS they're going to save, so of course almost everyone who is switching is saving.

We started with GEICO when I used to work for them because of my employee discount. I haven't worked there for a few years now, but I still compare every 6 months and so far they have stayed the cheapest option for us.

  • I've had Allstate for 14 years.  My parents have used them for 30+ years.  We had the BEST rep until he retired a few years ago.

Our new rep is awful, as in he has caused major issues including a two month period where he apparently canceled my auto insurance by mistake.  Whoo was I lucky!  I need to switch.  I've been putting it off because I'm lazy.

  • In my province we have mandatory basic insurance that you have to buy from the Insurance Corporation  and you can buy your own extended coverage from a private company, I usually just buy from BCAA- our version of AAA and get a decent deal.. I dont add too much extra aside from liability..

  • We worked with a agent who shopped around for us for not just the best price, but the most insurance for the price. We ended up paying exactly the same as our old insurance, but getting twice as much.

This. We used the same agent my parents use, and the agent found the best price for the coverage we needed. It would up being a different company than my parents use.

  • We have Progressive. When I first signed on with them back in college it was because they had great rates (maybe not the lowest, but the lowest for the amount I got). After getting in a minor accident I was so pleased with their customer service that I never wanted to switch. I have had such great luck with them that I have not even looked to see if another company has lower rates. We now have all three of our cars, our homeowners insurance and our renters insurance through them (we own two homes in states we used to live in and rent currently because we just moved.). My engagement ring is also insured through our home owners insurance.

  • We have USAA. Since my mom's a member, I'm a member, even though she's only a member because her mother's late second husband was in the military. We bank with them and have our other insurance with them, and it's been lovely. I chose it based on the fact that it was cheap and I'd heard good things, and it hasn't let me down.

  • They offered a special rate for grads of MH's university.

I agree--I hate all of the commercials/calls/etc claiming to be the BESTEST LOWESTEST EVERRRRRR. And for everything, not just car insurance. Having a business, I feel like I get it twice over. I have people calling/coming in to my store almost every day offering us cheaper rates on our insurance, phone, internet, utilities, payment processing, etc etc etc. So annoying.

  • I used to be with Geico, and they were terrible. I had a big chunk of ice fly off of a truck on the highway, smash the hood of my car and they acted like I was inconveniencing them with the claim. DH, who was FI at the time, was happy with Nationwide, so I switched. We now have all vehicles and the house with them. Their rates are good (maybe not the cheapest, but I don't think cheapest always gets you the best service), and we have a local rep if we have any questions.

  • I use USAA because that is what my parents used and they had for me when I turned 16. Last time I checked, they were competitive in pricing. I get discounts and incentives based on the fact that I have been a customer for over 16 years with a good driving record.
