Big Boy bed- Need help

So we've set up J's big boy room and are ready to start trying to get him in his new bed (twin bed with rails).  Any suggestions?  I think we goofed by letting him hang out in the room.  We thought it would help him get used to it but it seems like it just made it a fun place to play.  He's had a crib tent his whole life but with the bed he has the ability to climb out so short of using duct tape I don't know how to make the kid stay in bed.  I've tried taking him in there for naps but he doesn't want to lay down he wants to run around the new room.  I'll take all the help I can get (or duct tape donations).  Please help!

Re: Big Boy bed- Need help

  • Are there toys in his room? Can he get in and out of his bed safely or does he fall out?

We started with just a twin mattress on the floor before putting it up on a bed frame, but he climbs in and out now just fine and hasnt fallen. Naps were harder to do than bedtime since it is still daylight but we would just close him in his room leave him 2 books and tell him it was naptime. In the beginning he would definitely roam his room looking for stuff to get into but we removed all his toys for the time being, now he just falls asleep or reads to himself for 5 min then falls asleep. I think it took him maybe a week or two to get used to the new bed we transitioned at 15 months, but when we travel it is still a hassle.

  • No toys in his room.  Didn't want extra distractions on trying to get him to bed.  He can climb in and out of the bed no problem.  Which I guess is a problem for me,  I can't get him to stay in the darn thing.  I have a feeling if he naps at all in there it's going to be on the floor or where ever he passes out because laying in the bed and behaving like he does in his crib seems like a long shot at this point.

  • The first few days A fell asleep for naps on his rug by his door. Sometimes I would move him to the bed so he would associate it for sleeping but if he wasn't fully out then that backfired on me. It didn't take him too long to realize his bed is more comfy than the floor. To make the napping transition easier we tried to really tire him out physically in the morning outdoor time, swimming, errands out of the house that way we could do lunch, wind down with a book or two and he would be more apt to fall asleep than try to get into mischief. he did have a few weeks where he fell asleep in his high chair mid lunch, but score I can usually move him to his bed and then he was waking there and just fine to continue his afternoon of playing. Good luck!

This sounds really bad (please no flaming!) but we would put our kids in their "big kid beds" and then shut the doors which they could not open at the time.  I always had my kids in a big kid bed around 18 months.  Some mornings we would open the door and they would be sleeping in front of it.  Felt really bad, but it did work.  After a couple of weeks they would stay in bed most of the time without much incident.

Now this time around Isaac can open doors so we are just going to have to consistently keep putting him back in bed - don't know what else we can do unless we get doorknobs that he can't open.

  • Griff sleeps on a double bed with no frame but there is a boxspring. We started out with naps first and then at night. We also shut the door. Hes never climbed out of bed or fallen off.
