How much do you tip for a cut/color?

For those of you that get your hair professionally cut or colored, what perecentage do you tip? I think I started with a bad habit of overtipping early on with my stylist and now I feel like she expects it! Now that I'm spending all my money on baby food and diapers, I need to reel the tipping back in......

Re: How much do you tip for a cut/color?

  • I never even knew that it was appropriate to tip hair dressers until I got married. My husband insisted we tip our hair dresser and I'm glad he did. It's actually not very common in my area. (small, rural, mid-western town) Nonetheless, I tip about $3. The cut is around $17 so I just give her $20.

  • Another vote from a former stylist for 20ish percent.  I tip my friend who cuts my hair $10 on a $60 cut, just because it makes it an even $70 and she's booth rent so she gets the whole amount of the cut plus the tip.  If she were commissioned I'd throw out the couple extra bucks, but an even $70 makes it easier.

Ditto AG. I've been going to the same stylist for 6 1/2 years, and I've always tipped her 20%.I thought that was the standard for services?

Yes  I do a full foil and cut most of the time so needless to say...it isn't cheap! Definitely 20% at least because it takes about 2.5 hours of her day. Sometimes longer.

  • 20%.  My hair takes 2 hours to cut and highlight.  She's worth every penny.

  • A cut is $43, so I tip $5. A color/highlight is $100 and I tip $10 for the extra work involved. But my hairdresser is the owner or her own business so she doesn't have to pay part to an owner or work on commission. If she was an employee of the salon I would tip 15-20%.

My mother used to own a hair salon and she said as the owner she of course loved the tips but didn't expect much. Her employees though really loved the extra tips since it all went into their pockets at the end of the day.

  • It depends on how pleased I am with the service. If it is terrible sometimes I dont tip. If it is bad 10%, if it is okay usually 20% and if it is stellar I will go over 20%.

I apply that to pretty much everything though, wait staff, nail people, massage therapist, etc. They are already getting paid a base for their work, I refuse to give people 20% when they suck. My husband thinks 20% is standard regardless but I obviously disagree.

  • A 20% tip is my standard for services as well.

  • Anywhere from 15-25% for any salon/spa services. For a cut and color, I always see the same stylist who I really like. I usually give her 20% which is about a $25 tip. Around the holidays, I tip extra.

Same as prev poster for cut 5 dollars Cost is about twenty. If I get a foil I bump to 10 or 15 but that is really labor intensive
This is exactly what I do.
