Bad mom moment yesterday

DD has sensorineural hearing loss and we've been goin through the testing process to see if DD is a candidate for the Cochlear Implant. I've had a lot on my mind with DD lately, with her birthday and meeting with her birth parents coming up soon. Yesterday we had an MRI for DD, and I got up early to make sure we would get there on time. We live about 25 minutes away from the MRI center, but I was still feeling really anxious so I was fretting over all the details. DD is having a really hard morning, throwing tantrums, the whole shebang. DS knows today is a big day, and he was coming along with us because the MRI would be over before preschool started (and they're actually on time in this center).

As the morning went on we got closer and closer to the appointment, and I have to fight DD to get dressed, and then we had a pretty epic battle over the carseat. DS was a trooper and tried to calm his sister down, it was absolutely adorable. But by the time we were all actually in the car (with DD still screaming), it was 18 minutes until our appointment. This MRI center goes like clockwork, and if we missed the appointment we'd have to wait at least another 2 weeks to get another. So I said the one thing I never expected I would ever say to my 4-year-old son.

"Look out for cops."

Then I sped pretty shamelessly the whole way there. I made my son aid me in committing a traffic crime. We were 4 minutes late and were just in time. We got the MRI, then I took DS to preschool, I spent the rest of the day wrangling my inexplicably hyperactive post-sedation child (I miss when she couldn't walk) and feeling guilty over making DS my cop spotter. When the wife came home from work I told her all about it, and when I told her about making DS look for cops all she said was "Yeah, you probably shouldn't have done that." Thanks, Tams. That's very reassuring.

The worst part is DS was actually pretty good at it, which worries me.

Re: Bad mom moment yesterday

  • Aw.  rough morning.  I had one too- my right hand is out of commission and I had to get 3 kids and a cat who hates the crate to the vet at 7 a.m. to get a tumor removed.  Not easy to cram a cat in a box with a left hand and a cast on the right.  So I got scratched and hissed "sonofa..."  We get in the car and my 4 yr old quietly asks me what "b!tch" means.  Then my 3 yr old twins picked up on it...  Stuff happens!  At least everything that neededto happen did.

Just don't make the huge mistake I made.  I taught my daughter to read the spedometer.

  • Uh oh! Usually DS just stares out the window in the car and doesn't pay attention to my driving, but now I'm being overly cautious.

  • This is really funny. Sorry. I wouldn't stress. We all make mistakes. At least this is one you'll laugh about later.

  • Wow, sounds like a rough morning! Hope she gets some good news on the CI front.

My son is a total backseat driver, too, and he gets really annoyed when I'm stuck in traffic and not going as fast as he'd like. I'm concerned for the days when he's the one behind the wheel ;)
