What a craptastic Day...

My office puts out a monthly safety newsletter-everyone is welcomed to submit articles.

A co-worker of mine (also an engineer but works in a different depatment) wrote an article this month and I am struggling with not calling him out so hard for the following reasons:

1) The article directly references 8 projects that I have done recently and about how awesome they are

2) The article then says it was all made possible by his department, our maintence departmen and "almost no direction from the engineer that decided to buy the things"

3) After the 8th installation he approached me about doing a training on this subject-which I did-and it was so highly regarded I had to give 4 more presentations to other departments

The article doesn't mention me at all and I am pissed about the "no direction" thing.  I just want to scream.  Sometimes it is so hard being an emotional woman in man's world.  If I was a dude I could just call him up and be like "dude, that was crappy" he would apologize and it would be over.  But, because I am a woman I have to hold it in and pretend it doesn't matter, because if I call him out I am just being "hormonal" ahghhhhhh....

  • That so sucky!  I'd still call him out on it.

Yes, this!  But in reality, I'm pretty non-confrontational so I'd have to figure out a joking manner to use.

  • That is bull. I would at least write him an email.

  • Ugh. What a jerk.

  • What a passive-agressive jerkwad to write an article like that in the company newsletter.

    Call him out.

  • I see an article in next month's newsletter:

"I am pleased that the 'your department' department has been able to provide a product/service that seems to be helping other departments.  I would be happy to provide further training to anyone who is in need of some extra direction on the matter"

Of course you would have to make it a bit more specific to your situation directly, but I would surely do something like this.  1) It will get his attention at the very least and 2) you could always use crazy pregnancy hormones as your excuse if you had to.  If you say or do nothing though, he will continue to take advantage and make claims on others' work.   The sooner someone stands up to him the better chance this type of thing will stop with him.

Sorry you have to deal with this though - I happen to work for an engineering firm (although a different type I'm guessing) and I can honestly say - they truly still believe that engineering is a man's world.  It's almost kind of sad...

It is really prevalent here.  I have to say that my current boss is amazing-I am sure due in large part to the fact that his wife is also a mom of 4 and chemical engineer as well.

Thank you for your advice.  I went and spoke with my boss about it this morning.  I prefaced my statement by saying that I didn't want to come across as whiny, but I felt like the article crossed a professional boundary that I wasn't comfortable with.  He agreed and told me not to worry, it has been noted by upper management that this guy is not a team player and that his "time is limited".  He also told me that the publication is far from professional and not worth anything in his opinion.

So ya.  New day = )

That's a great way to put it.  I'm glad your boss was receptive.  And I think it's good to show that you'll stand up for yourself and your reputation - particularly since your reputation reflects on your department and your boss.

    Good job!
