December 2010 Moms

just a sigh about life in general

Just wanting to whine.  I started back to work with 30 first graders two and half weeks ago.  It's been a long two and half weeks.  Thankfully, they hired another teacher and on Thursday ten of my little cuties go to her!  I like them all, but they must go!  Like all teachers, I'm expected to do three to four different assessments per child that require me to somehow sit individually for long periods of time with each student, while 29 other six year olds supposedly "work quietly at their desks".  HA!

My principal decided all the teachers needed to ride the school bus after school to help discipline children on the bus.  It was 106* out today and I, the pregnant teacher, rode the stupid 106* school bus for 45 minutes!  I thought I was going.to.die.  I got back to school and called my OB for an excuse note to not ever ride the bus again.  They faxed it and I'm sure I'll hear about that tomorrow and how I'm not being a "team player" or something.  I also emailed her my letter explaining how I will take off 12 weeks of FMLA leave in Feb. and she has already been pestering me about that before said email.  She doesn't feel anyone should take off that much time from work, where we are "needed".  Apparently, my newborn baby doesn't "need" me.  Argh.  I'm so annoyed by it, that if I'm called in to "discuss" it, I'm taking my union rep with me.

We are going to put our house on the market asap and spent this weekend cleaning.  My DH went and got a storage unit to store some of stuff in so we can make the house look more presentable, but right now it just looks like hoarders live here with piles of sorted stuff stacked everywhere.  Sigh to that.

My child doesn't sleep.  And he has a cold, which causes him to wake up coughing, because he didn't already wake up enough!

Sigh in general. :)

  • The first few weeks back to school are insane!  Current expectations for teachers are unnatural :). You shouldn't do anything you feel is unsafe.  Period.  And the twelve weeks is your legal right ( I am sure you are taking part of it unpaid even).  If you work in a public school, I don't think your principal can bat an eyelash over fmla.  Sorry you are going through this.  Thankfully, some of your kids have another teacher.  Just do what you need to do to get by this year.  No need to win teacher of,the year ;)

  • I am home all day with just 4 kids...I don't know how you do it, I have much respect for teachers! Good luck selling your house, hope you get interest quick.

As always, well said by SM.  I hope moving may mean that you're headed to a new district with a new princi"pal"?

Hah princi"pal."  That always makes me think of Beezus and her crush on her teacher.

Anyway, back to pitterpatter.  SM is right.  Your principal needs her head checked.  And a good swift kick in the rear.  Hopefully things will smooth out after the 10 darlings go meet their new teacher.

  • Wow, sorry they are being so insensitive. I seriously can't imagine someone quibbling with a mom about their FMLA-entitled leave. Hope things get better for you soon!

  • 30 kids is way too many. Glad they are going to get you back down to 20 - much more manageable. What in the world are they doing making you ride the bus? I'm sure you don't get paid extra to do that. I feel so bad for teachers - it's a tough job and they seem to ask more and more from you all the time. New baby on the way, selling your house and a non-sleeping toddler! I would be sighing as well.

  • I'm pretty sure that forcing you to ride the bus violates your union contract. I would look into that and ask your union rep.  No one in my district would do it, unpaid.  It's not in your job description, and if they want the students to be disciplined they can hire bus aides.

I have no idea about the bus "rules". I'm sure our union rep has already looked into it - she's pretty on top of things like that. Technically, they are back at the school before our contract time or close to it, so they may be able to force us.  She told us at our staff meeting the first day that everyone "would be volunteering to ride the bus this year.  Here is your schedule."  Someone laughed and made a comment about "volunteering", but I guess no one else wants to rock the boat on that one.  I suppose if everyone goes along with it, then it's fine?  Of course, it's unpaid.  When do they ever pay teachers for things like that?! :)

She didn't say a word about my doctor note today though and sent me an email saying "okay" and I only saw her for five seconds, but she didn't yet mention the FMLA leave either.  I'm positive that one is coming though, although I worded email in a way that suggested the discussion was closed.  Even though I do feel guilty when I take any time off work, because I do think I need to be the one there, I don't feel guilty when it comes to maternity leave!  I learned last time that everyone lives through it and if you get a good sub, they will still learn what they need to know.

If we move, it will probably be in the same or another surrounding suburb of our big city.  I work for the big city, so I'll probably be in the same school.  Teaching jobs are hard to come by around here in the suburbs because practically every teacher stays until they retire!  I'm not a huge fan of our administration, but if I stay in the same district, I have the best school by far!  Some of our schools are ROUGH and mine is pretty safe and small with a strong PTA.  Our principal has some great ideas and does well with parents and running the school, but doesn't have a great relationship with staff all the time.  She's just really, really pushy.  She actually told one teacher she hoped they didn't choose to breastfeed because it's a pain to schedule around pumping and she wished she didn't legally have to let teachers pump!  I'm sure she LOVED me pumping for a year last time! ;)  I already included in my maternity leave letter that I plan to pump upon my return too.  I think maybe she just doesn't have an "this is not appropriate to say to my employee" filter.

As for my cutie pies - I'm so excited to only have 20 tomorrow!  I'll still see the others next door all day! (Open, no walls school!)  My 20 desks look so much better in my area than 30 crammed together!  Also, one of my kiddos scored incredibly high on his reading assessment today and I'm so excited about that!  He is already reading everything you put in front of him!  He asked me what a "Global Atlas for Young Explorers" meant yesterday because he read it on a book (an atlas obviously)!  Whoo-hoo!
