Low Platelets

At about 26 wks my doctor had a routine blood test done and found out my platelets were at 130 where the normal low is 140. She had another blood test done 2 wks after that and they went up to 134 so I wasn't too worried. However, at 32 wks she had me do yet another and they went down to 118. She let me know that if it gets below 100 I won't have a choice of an epidural I'm planning to go natural but would still like the option. I'm a FTM and was wondering if anyone has had experience with this and if so did your platelets go up by delivery time?

Re: Low Platelets

  • I'm in the same boat! My doc said there's nothing you can do to increase them either... I have another blood test 37 weeks to see where they are.

    I have lower than normal platelets even while not pregnant. During pregnancy, I have dilutionally low platelets because, while your blood volume increases during pregnancy, your platelet output does not. At 28w, my platelets were 107k and 4 weeks later, they came up to 110k. Since I normally have lower platelet numbers, my OB is not concerned and is just monitoring everything. I have always delivered medfree anyway, so an epidural is really not a concern for me.nbsp;

    Did you have excessive bleeding during delivery? That is my biggest fear is having that problem. I know I probably shouldn't worry because my OB doesn't seem worried.

  • Mine are low, I was told I could do steroids and/or transfusions to help raise them. My low levels are related to a non pregnancy related diagnosis though, pregnancy just further lowers them.
