And how much "over" their regular awake time do you do it?
I feel bad for DS2 on preschool drop-off mornings. He wakes usually 6.30am and drop-off is at 8.30am. It's only 20 sec. walk from our house, so we're back right away and he's in bed by 8.45am. But this morning he woke up at 6am so he was awake almost 3 hours.. poor baby. 2 hours is his usual max.
I felt so bad for him as he's so good-natured that he wasn't even grizzling, just looking spaced out and red-eyebrowed.
I hope I'm not the only one who does this:( Feeling terribly guilty right now. Especially as DS1 was allowed to sleep whenever/as long as he wanted, being the only child, but DS2 is constantly being shortchanged:((
Re: Do you ever stretch out LO's awake time?
I have to do this sometimes too. I've done three hours a couple times when we were at one of DD1's weekly classes and she would not fall asleep in the car seat. She was up about 3 hours, but she was not fussy so I figured it was okay. I do feel guilty though! DD1 had all of her sleep needs met and DD2 definitely doesn't always have that same opportunity.
It also worries me because she is getting to the point where falling asleep in the car seat while we are out and about isn't always happening, and she will sometimes get cranky. Don't know what I'm going to do once she completely stops doing that!
Exactly. I have this guilt almost every day!
My DS2 doesn't always fall asleep in his carseat either so we have this same issue sometimes.. esp. at DS1's activities.
Well they do say the 2nd kid learns to fit in your routine, and the 3rd kid practically raises itself;)
I do it when necessary or if it's close to bed time. Could you maybe get him to sleep in a carrier (you use an ergo right?) then he can sleep while you walk to school?
In the afternoon I take her out in the stroller for a couple of hours. Normally she will sleep for 20 min while we're out, but sometimes she doesn't. If I don't get back in time to put her down by 2:30, I have to keep her up until 4:15 or it will ruin her schedule. On those days she's up from 1:00 to 4:15. But then I let her sleep until 6:15 to make up for it.
During the day I normally don't unless she wakes up earlier than her usual time. I leave for work at 8:40 and usually she wakes up around 8:00. If she wakes up earlier than usual sometimes she is up for close to 2 - 2 1/2 hours when her usual is about 1 1/2-2 hours. She does get crabbby which is miserable but I don't want to put her down at home for a short nap only to wake her and then have to deal with her still being tired. She refuses to nap if you wake her up even after a short nap.
At night we don't put her down past 7:00 because otherwise she doesn't go to sleep until midnight or later. She is a night owl. As it is we never get her down before 10:00.

Yeah I do have an ergo (good memory;) and he would fall asleep in it, but I guess I want to put him in his bed for morning nap as it's usually a longer one 1-2hrs. Not sure if he'd transfer? I'm a bit scared to try. Poor baby! and mean mummy.
