Do I need to read more baby books?

I read the Sears' Baby Book before LO was born, and parts of others - and I feel like I have things down, and what I don't have down I look up online or ask my friends (or you guys!) or the pedi. But I am wondering if I need to be reading more about this first year. What do you think? I read somewhere that the What to Expect series' first year book is good. I wasn't a fan of the writing style of What to Expect When You're Expecting (it read a bit too much like Cosmo to me and also was all about everything that can go wrong, it just annoyed me too much so I only read a part of it) - so not sure if What to Expect the First Year is going to be better.

Thoughts?

Re: Do I need to read more baby books?

  • I haven't and don't plan on reading any baby books. First off I don't have much free time to read and second I don't really like baby books that much. I think they make you expect too much from your baby. For example if the book says most 4 month olds are rolling or most 5 month olds sitting and you baby isn't "on track" it put negative thoughts in your mind. When in reality every baby does things at their own pace and shouldn't been generalized like some books do.

But what do I know I never even read pregnancy books or took any labor classes. I am in the belief of maternal instincts unless concerns/problems occur, in which I take action by researching or seeking advice for the issue at hand.

  • I have the what to expect in your first year and honestly, there is nothing in the book that I find to be that great so far. At first it was nice to see what ds should be able to do for his age, that that is about it. Now I just feel like I understand it more now. I would like to see if other refer you to some other books that they really like.

  • I read my babycenter email each week and that's enough info for me. If I want to know more, I will google it. We have the What to Expect First Year book and it's just okay. Honestly we haven't touched it since she was about 2 months old. DH read it a lot in the beginning and kind of got discouraged because, like lauranicole said, it can sometimes make you feel like your baby is behind, when in fact, every baby does things at their own pace.

  • I've been skimming the different books about development at my library. "Is This A Phase?" and "Your Questions Answered" have some useful stuff, although there is also a lot of Captain Obvious stuff in the second one, too.

  • I confess, I don't read books about babyhood. I rely on my pedi and my pedi hubby to let me know if something isn't right. And I'm really not stressing milestones on my own. The pedi asks about them whenever we go. I really want to start reading more about parenting and such, for past the baby stage, but that'll have to wait til after my MA comps.
