megoguen or anyone else that sells crafting stuff

I've been thinking of starting a crafting business.  How did you get started?  Do you have any good tips?

  • I crochet children's hats and have had some success with it!  I started a FB page with pics of my hats, prices, other info...

Etsy is a great place to sell crafty stuff as well!

  • I've put some of my stuff on etsy it just seems very saturated.  It also seems like a hard place to sell unless someone is looking for specific things, like hats.  The other issue I'm having is focus.  I a lot of fingers in a lot of areas.  I'm just so scattered! Confused

  • After I lost my job in 2008, the job market was horrid in my field. I ended up starting my own business. Initially, I bought my domain and started a website and then concurrently sold on Etsy. Yes, Etsy is definitely over saturated in many categories, these days. I got my " big break" about 5 months after I started up...a celebrity wore my work on the red carpet. The stylist for the celebrity found me just via Google and placed a huge order via my website.

My biggest piece of advice to is to start off with a business plan and focus on your market. A business plan can really help you solidify your ideas and purpose when you feel a bit scattered. Who is your customer? What are your profit margins?  What does he/she want/ need? How is your product different from someone with a similar product? How do you fit in your niche market? I am constant going back to those questions and tweaking and reworking to grow. For growth, I eventually had to move away from just being Internet based. I went to brick and mortar stores with my product in an attempt to open up accounts and broaden my market base. I also ended up doing consulting/ freelance  work for other designers.

Starting your own business can be scary , frustrating and a LOT of hard work with no pay, sometimes. At the same time it is exhilarating and rewarding. Follow your heart and stay true to yourself. Good luck!

  • I would totally share but I always figured it would be against TOS because of theknot( I'm in the wedding industry). Now the troll stuff has happened and if I posted my work or my company it would be really easy to figure out a lot of personal info. about me via Google.  :(
