Re: Breaking Amish

  • DH and I can't wait for this show too. We used to watch a show like that on Discovery channel I think? But now we don't get that channel anymore. I think its super interesting, too.

  • Ive been looking forward to it too. The Amish interest me for some reason.

  • I'll be honest, these shows annoy me. The Amish have a 90 retention rate. They have theological reasons for their beliefs. They aren't crazy or abusive. I hope they portray them accurately!
  • I'm fascinated by the Amish and their lifestyle as well. I'm definitely going to be DVRing it!
  • Me too! I set my TiVo to record the series! Can't wait!

The Amish aren't perfect and there is actually a high rate of abuse among some of the Amish.

@Gisa, I work in an Amish community and am fascinated by them, too.

It is true that their abuse rates are high. But, the Amish I have known are such good people. I hate seeing them made freak shows.

  • A friend of mine is obsessed with the Amish  and I have been to PA once with her. They were so nice and their craftsmanship with furniture blew me away ( my friend bought a bed).  Their lifestyle is certainly intriguing. I'm excited about the show too.

I can't imagine living in that sort of environment and then moving to NYC. I would guess it is an incredible eye-opening and mind-blowing experience ( it was for me and I'm not Amish!). It will be interesting to see how the show unfolds.

Intercourse isn't an Amish town. There are no "Amish towns". The Amish live out on farms, not in traditional communities. It's a common misconception. When I worked in tourism, we always got asked where their towns are. They don't have towns, they are intertwined with the "English". DH works amongst them. Unfortunaty, drugs are known in the community and the Amish aren't exempt. Fact: I almost got married in Intercourse but the church was too small. I got married in Paradise. I did work in Intercourse. Another Fact: I'm Pennsylvania Dutch but not Mennonite or Amish.

  • Linda Castillo has a series of thrillers that take place in a fictional Amish town.  They're really good, but pretty graphic so some people may find them offensive.  But if you're looking for a good Amish thriller (two words I never thought I'd use together in a sentence) check them out!  Many of the Amish women in the community where I am a librarian read these (you'd be surprised the kind of things they read!)

Also, more in the inspriational/christian fiction section that the Amish like reading that are also about the Amish are books by Kathleen Fuller.

Mindy Starns Clark also does some Amish mysteries that are pretty good but not graphic.

I can't quote on my phone, but it's considered Amish country which is why there is so much tourism there. Like i said i was younger when i went there and was under the impression that they made most of their money from buggy rides. Where did you work at in intercourse?

I don't get the tourism BUT I've lived here my whole life. I don't get the draw of Hershey either and can not believe tickets to the park are pushing $60, I remember paying less than that for season passes in high school/college. Amish Country was dubbed by tourists, not locals. The company I worked for was a little business off the beaten path, nothing to do with tourism at that job. Not one of the buggy companies is run by Amish. In fact one of the buggy owners died when his horse got spooked. Yes, that company is still running. DH does work in the tourism sector so I know we survive on tourism and no tourists =no paycheck. It's a love/hate relationship. You hate the extra traffic and people stopping in the middle of a 55 mph rd but its your livelihood.
