WDYD in this situation

So I'm anticipating getting out a lot with DS1 and DS2 (once he is here) but there is one thing I have been thinking about.  If you are out with your two year old and your newborn wants to nurse, how does that work?  DS1 likes to run away so I can't imagine sitting down somewhere to nurse and having him stand right there next to me the whole time.  Especially since newborns can take forever to nurse.  I can only picture DS1 running away while I run after him with DS2 latched on and my boob hanging out, lol.

  • I think in that case, you nurse when you're in a contained area. Where are you planning to go?

  • I honestly I usually went out with my Moms Club friends.  Having a friend to help out with the older ones is priceless.
  • Where are you planning on going? An amusement park?

I would choose areas/places where I knew that my older kid(s) were contained in some way. Like they couldn't get too far.

Also, like a PP, a group of moms or friends helps a great deal in this situation.

  • For everyday errands, we nursed in the car while DS1 was still restrained in his car seat.  For atypical trips, I would put him in a stroller and let him snack/hydrate or have a friend/family member accompany me and play with him while I fed the baby.

  • I generally tried to keep us in more contained areas in the newborn phase, playgrounds that were fenced in so DD1 couldn't just leave, etc. I also got really good at nursing in the moby and then was able to go wherever and have both hands free for DD1

  • Wear the baby.  That's what I've done.  I can walk, keep an eye on the older kid(s) and nurse at the same time this way.

    This exactly.

Just thinking about doing the stuff I do now.  The library and mall were the ones I was thinking might be a challenge.  I guess the mall might have nursing rooms so that could work.

Why would I go to an amusement park, lol?  Are you serious?  I go to the library every week for story time, that's the main one I was thinking about.

  • Oh the baby wearing and nursing is a good idea.  I hadn't thought of that one.  The playground was another concerning one but baby wearing would work.  I'll have to figure out how to do that while nursing but that seems like a good plan!

  • I obviously don't have two, but I have friends that do... You can get carriers that are good for breastfeeding on the move and still provide cover so you're not flashing everyone.

  • I wasn't able to nurse, but when I needed to give DD2 a bottle when we were out and about I just contained my older DD. If we were in a store, she was in the cart with a snack or toy, anywhere else it was the stroller.

I took it to mean, where are you going that it will be that hard to contain a kid, but maybe I misread it.

I thought story time at the library was one of the easier places to do it - there are lots of other kids there, you see the same people each week so it's all familiar and the kids are usually involved in the program, so they didn't have time or a need to run away.

Oh I know, I was just laughing at the image of myself at an amusement park with a two year old and a newborn. I don't think there would be much for us to do there besides me chasing ds around! Yeah storytime might turn out okay. They are contained in a room but ds opens the door and runs out. And then we usually play in the childrens area and he runs away from there too. But hopefully it'll all turn out okay!

  • lol...I took my 2u2 to the amusement park and the zoo by myself.  I would plan to take them to a 3D movie or on a train ride when #2 had to nurse (I always had my kids on a schedule though, so I knew when they would be hungry or tired in advance).  I did have more than one time that I ran out of library storytime or through the playground with one boob hastily put away.  It happened.  No one died.  I didn't really even get that many odd looks.

Really?  I nursed DS for two years and have never been running and nursed at the same time.  Maybe I wasn't clear in my PP but I meant running after him.  If you look up a few posts I said he runs out of story time and runs through the library.  He also runs away at the mall and playground.  They aren't contained areas.

I think the baby wearing is a great suggestion for running and nursing at the same time though.  Is that what you did?  I'm having some trouble imagining DS2 staying latched on as I sprint after DS1 but we'll see, those babies have some super sucking power.

Can you nurse in a sling or ergo? I know my neighbor did that. She's on kid 3 and they're all close in age so there is no sitting an nursing, there is only on the go nursing.
Otherwise I'd start whirling with getting your kid to stay in the stroller with a small special "nursing" toy or snack or stay in a specific area. You'll also probably limit your outings at first. Once your new born falls into a rhythm then you can set up more fun outings for when he's be sleepingnbsp;or otherwise content.

We have an ergo but I have trouble picturing being able to nurse in that. I may try the sling, that seems like a more natural nursing position. Thanks for the ideas!
