Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP: Reflux mama's come in!

DS started reflux meds at about 2 months. We started him out on Axid (similar to Zantac). It worked until about 4 months and then it seemed to wear off so we switched him to Prilosec. Our pedi told us that after we ran out of our current bottle that we should try to see how he does without it to determine whether or not he still needs it.  Well, he didn't have a dose yesterday morning or evening and last night was absolutely awful.  The heartbreaking screaming was back in full force.  Then, today he projectile vomited 3 times... something he hasn't done for MONTHS!  Clearly, he still needs the medicine.  We were told that it should peak between 4-6 months.  I'm just nervous about him still being on medicine and don't want him to have to be on it forever.  Has anyone else's LO "grown out" of their reflux yet or are your babes still needing their medicine as well?

  • We were able to stop the Zantac at 5.5 months.  Our ped said if she still needed it at 6 months we would try stopping again at a year.

  • My girls only had reflux as young babies, but my Dr said that in over 30 yrs of doctoring he has only seen one child need medicine past a year. Obviously that's not a very meaningful statistic, but it seems that it's reasonably uncommon for it to be an ongoing issue in children.

  • We go to see a GI in children's hospital for our reflux. And they told us that we would not wean until a year and that most babies reflux is gone at that point
  • My DS has been on Prevacid since he was 3 weeks old, he had severe reflux and were refered to a pediatric GI dr at that time.  At the first appt the dr told us that most babies need reflux meds till around 9 months old.  We plan on trying to wean his dose in a couple of weeks.

  • My DD is on Prevacid, and we've been weaning her off for about 6 weeks (she's 8.5  months now). She was on a full tab, now we're down to 1/4 tab in the evenings. I think we'll try no meds next week.

We started trying to wean before, but it was a definite no-go. This time it seems to be going well.

  • We started weaning out boys after their 6 month appointment and it was fine!  Still spit up of course..but that's normal I suppose.  No more reflux discomfort for them though!
  • My pedi wanted my LO to be off the medicine by 6 months.  Unfortunately, my DD was throwing up like crazy and crying all the time, which is not like her at all.  I talked to my pedi right away and let him know my concerns, and he increased her dose of zantac and problem solved.  He wants to try to wean her off the medicine again around a year.  Give baby a hug and your doctor a call.  You don't want your LO in unnecessary pain.  Best wishes.

  • DS started on Omeprazole and then moved to Prevacid for his reflux around 2-3 months of age.  Tried cold turkey when he was 6 months old and not even two days in he was mad and refusing bottle.  He's been back on Prevacid since then and we're thinking of trying cold turkey again in a week or so.  DD is now 3YO and she was on Prevacid until she was 11 months.
