If someone is babysitting for us during dinnertime...

Should we provide dinner?

Me and DH are going on a real date on Thursday and getting our first nonfamily babysitter! Yippee! She babysits for my friends who have twins so I trust that she can handle one baby. Anyway she's coming 5p until 8p or so... we wanted to go out early in case theres a bedtime meltdown that occurs.

  • I know my mom would always do it, but she was out a lot longer than that. Can you ask your friend what they normally do? I honestly never have dinner until after that time personally.

  • When I used to babysit I was always provided dinner or money for delivery. When/If we hire a babysitter, I'd provide them with dinner.

  • When I used to babysit they provided me with food, but it was just a microwaveable meal or something. Yay for date night!! H and I have yet to have one!

  • I did A LOT of babysitting in my day all meals/snacks were always provided. It was either "help yourself to anything in the pantry or fridge" or money for takeout.

I had a family that would always have some ready-made salads from Trader Joe's. Those worked. Or, frozen pizza.

Have fun on your date. I'm excited for you!!

When I was a sitter, and when I worked a couple of nights for the family I was a nanny for, it was always "help yourself to whatever we have" as well.

Yay for date night!  Have fun lady!

  • I'd probably get a small freezer pizza or something like that. At the very least I'd have some snack food on hand and let them know they are welcome to it.

  • I agree with everyone else.. and I always provide something, but at the same time it annoys me because here I am having a night off cooking and I have to cook anyway! or prepare a meal.  You know what I mean.  Enjoy your night!!

  • When I baby sat money was usually left for pizza or whatever. The kids were a bit older so they had to eat too. Enjoy your date night!
  • When I babysat they would pretty much be like everyone else "help yourself," sometimes they would order a pizza or make sure they had things like frozen meals, mac & cheese, etc.

Although when I first started babysitting I would always keep a few snacks handy in my purse just incase. It was very awkward for me at first to just "help myself" I grew up around families that if you were visiting their house you didn't go on their fridges. You always asked first. My ex-boyfriends mother actually switched the door on the fridge so you couldn't see in it if you were sitting in their kitchen! lol
