NPSR- How do you do laundry??

We have 5 people creating it and I have tried coming up with a system, but haven't found one I love.

Currently I try 1 load a day, start to finish (wash/dry/putaway).  We use cloth tissues, napkins and cleaning towels, bed linens and towels, kids' clothes, our clothes (I am thrilled to no longer be washing diapers!!!), delicates and I try to get some of their stuffed animals when I can.

Do you have a system you love?

Re: NPSR- How do you do laundry??

  • I try to keep at least the wash/dry moving during the week -- so then clean laundry piles up in hampers. I try to pull out the really wrinkle-prone stuff and hang it up right away.

    On Sundays, DH does more loads all day and also does a massive amount of folding while I grocery shop, and I put it away when I get home. So at the very least we start out the week with almost everything clean & put away.

    I'm not sure I love our system, but it does work pretty well most of the time.

  • 5 people here, but dss does his own laundry as one of his chores.  Plus, I have cloth diapers, cloth napkins and rags for cleaning.

    No real system, but I make sure to keep everyone's laundry separate to keep folding easier.  Sometimes I combine the little ones.  I do usually 2 or more loads a day and make sure I at least dry it.  Folding happens quickly because I need the baskets again.  I make my own detergent too (except for diapers).

  • Not sure that it's a great system, but it works for us.

    We do all laundry on the weekends, because that's pretty much the only time we can wash, dry, fold, and put away all at once.  We do 6 loads spread out over the weekend: mine and DH's darks, mine and DH's whites, DS and DD's together, delicates (this also includes any of the kids' blankeys, stuffed animals, pillow pets, that need to be washed), towels and washcloths, sheets from all beds.  Sometimes if a load is really small we'll just hold off until the following weekend.  Like our whites...we don't seem to pile up a lot of white laundry, so sometimes I just wash those every 2 weeks.  I like doing it this way though.  DH is around to help, even the kids like to help me carry the laundry from one place to another, and we all start out the week with everything nice and clean.

  • We have 5 when you include SS.  I do 1-2 loads mid week and save the rest for the weekend.  I am bad at putting the clothes away that need to be hung.  Those usually don't get done until the weekends when all laundry is done.  Sometimes they sit there for an exyra week.  We wear PJ's two days in a row and don't wash our bath towels until day 2, which helps save on extra laundry.

  • About a year ago I switched to doing laundry just one day a week (though there's usually one or two loads about halfway through the week due to accidents or workout clothes and towels piling up :)) and I actually love it. I like just getting it all done at once rather than feeling like it's constantly hanging over my head.

    I do:

    * boys' laundry
    * bedding

    * whites (DH's and mine)
    * colored laundry (DH's and mine)

    * delicates (basically just mine)

    Sometimes the boys' excess gets sorted in with ours too.

  • I do laundry every Tues. I collect it all from the rooms, sort it based on colors and run loads all day. That night or another night DH and I will fold the laundry in front of the tv. From there, it takes awhile before it gets put away but usually everything's put away by the weekend.  My biggest tip is having multiple laundry baskets. I think i have 5. It is awesome because each person gets their own basket and that basket of clean folded gets put in the closet out of the way until it gets put away.

    We also have a lot of extras that get worn a lot. Like extra pjs, socks and DS1's underwear. I never have to do laundry in between. Once a week and we never run out of clean clothes.

  • Thanks, ladies.

    I used to do it all on the weekends, but  now that it is easier to go out on trips and not worry about naps and diapers, I HATE to stay cooped up in the house on weekends.  I used to wash it all one day and then spend the next 6 trying to get it put it away.  It is more manageable to get one load done start to put away a day, but what a drag, at least 5/7 days a week it is on my todo list.  I dislike emptying the dishwasher more, but seriously the laundry is out of control.  I am obsessed with schedules and rules for myself but laundry still piles up.  Every day!!

  • I try to do laundry 1-2 times per week period. I typically will toss in a load or 2 mid week and do the rest over the weekend although if it is a low laundry week then I can sometimes get away with only doing it on the weekend.  IF I do it during the week, I work from home and can get the stuff washed but need to fold it at night and then it doesn't get put away until the next day.  My DH does his work clothes as needed but I do the rest.  I can't wait until the kids are old enough to help as then it will be something that everyone does on their own once a week and I will still do the towels and that extra stuff.  I also use cloth napkins but they don't add that much extra laundry as they are not big and can be easily tossed in with a load of towels or clothes.
