2nd Trimester

losing all my hair?!

I'm 19 weeks, and for the past 2 weeks my hair has been falling out like CRAZY! I know it isn't my thyroid, (I get bloodwork done frequently because I'm semi-high-risk), so I really have no idea what the deal is. No one I know has said they ever experienced hair loss before delivery. I have naturally semi-curly hair that is usually thick and lustrous but since the pregnancy it's a giant frizzball unless I blow it out, and now I'm LOSING IT ALL!!!! Has anyone else had this problem??

  • No experience here. But if you are that worried call your doctor.

  • My hair is exactly the same. It was really wavy and easy before and now it's just a frizzy mess. It's been shedding so bad. I thought pregnancy was supposed to give us supermodel hair :/

  • Yeah, some women get thicker, shinier hair. Mine has been dull and falling out in clumps. So I got it cut off to my shoulders. It's much easier to work with now but I feel like it's growing in slower.

  • I know- I thought a women's hair was supposed to get thicker while pregnant... Not the case with me. My OB told me the hair loss is due to increased hormones; some women's hair gets thicker, some stays the same, some lose more. Unfortunately I'm in the last category :(  He told me there's nothing to worry about, just more of a pain when you're cleaning out the shower drain...

  • Me too... the last week or so it has been falling out in hand-fulls in the shower.... not fun.
  • I've been losing mine since the beginning. It was actually one of my first symptoms. Getting more protein in my diet has helped a little, but not much.

  • I love to read others experiences and not feel alone...it sucks for all of us but it something that makes you worry. Why does everyone else have nice fast growing hair - is there somethign wrong with my pregnancy?  I even read on americanpregnancy.org that it may be a symptom of miscarriage and being a PGALer it's not good to read at all.

I know everyone is different and I can have a perfectly normal pregnancy just that our hair falls out...think of it as the nutrients going to the baby instead of nice hair.  That's a bit more comforting.

  • The SECOND I got pregnant my hair started falling out. It's not like crazy-falling out, it's just there's more on my brush and on my pillow, and if I ran my hand through my hair right now I'd probably come away with more strands than usual. From what I've read, this is fairly common. My hair is also getting thicker, and "luscious" and all that jazz, but it's also falling out.

I had this problem a few years ago when I started taking YAZ. What's scary about it is that the second I stopped taking YAZ my hair stopped falling out, but it hasn't regrown.

    It's hormones, lovely, lovely, hormones.
