We had a choking incedent about 3 weeks ago...REAL choking...lifeless, no gasping, coughing, etc. And this was just on stage 3 food that had small "bits" in it.
So, we are backing down and purees is it.
I am just wondering if anyone else is still just doing purees and mashes? He has 8 teeth in front but hasnt grasped the chewing aspect yet....how in the world do you teach them to CHEW?!?!?
Re: Whos LO IS NOT chomping away on "real" pieces of food?
I'm confused how it's even possible to choke on something like that. How scary! What did you do?
We have taught LO to chew by giving her big pieces of food that require chewing to even fit in her mouth.

I dont know "how" you choke on something like that, but he did. And yes, it was frightening.
He can chew puffs with no problem but anything else he just swallows. He watches us eat...I will take a bite of my food and then give him a bite of his, etc.
I'm sure he did. What did you do to help him?
Purees teach babies to swallow without chewing. I'd probably stick with the puffs (or puffed rice/kamut/wheat which are way cheaper and less sugary) and other things that kind of dissolve. Cottage cheese curds are also good. Do super small pieces of soft fruits and veggies and give 1-2 pieces at a time so he can't shove a whole fistful in his mouth

I work in healthcare, so was trained in infant CPR. Luckily, bu the time I got him out of his high chair and on his tummy in my arms all I had to do was one back blow and up it came....along with everything else.
It looked like a crime scene when my husband walked in the front door!
I hear contradicting information...either give them large wedge type pieces to "gnaw" on or, small diced pieces of things. He has 8 front teeth, so he can actually bite pieces of food off...ACK!!
I have no idea what I am doing...
Since you started with purees I'd probably do the super small pieces. (That's what we did with DS)
We skipped purees so we do the super big pieces to gnaw on

Since LO is lacking molars, I find that he makes more of a "mashing" motion with his gums, rather than a "slicing and dicing" that we do with our adult teeth. With that in mind, try items that are soft and mashable. I started LO with bananas. I also would hold a peach (without skin) (a very soft one - not hard) and let him learn to gnaw on it with his front teeth. The toddler meat sticks are good, but if your LO is "biting off more than he can chew" then it is probably better to cut it into small pieces and mash it a bit and put in his mouth to start, so he doesnt choke. Scrambled eggs, Soft noodles, even small pieces of bread soaked in liquid, anything soft or lumpy is a good start. Take it one step at a time - he will get it. I wouldnt recommend starting off with anything like cheese because it is too hard to mash and could choke.
Start soft and move gradually up - next you can try cooked veggies like cut green beans after they have gotten the concept of chewing and there is less danger of choking. Hope that helps.
