TTC after 35

New member and TTC

Hi all!

I am 37, my DH is 38 and he has a very low sperm count.  At lowest it was 975,000 at best was 10,000,000, but with only 10% motility.  We did 3 IUIs last year all with clomid for follicle stim.  The last time I also did and HCG injection.  None resulted in a pregnancy.

After going through all the IVF prerequisites, my DH, decided that he couldn't handle spending that much money on IVF and it not work.  I have 3 children from a previous marriage and he feels like that would be taking too much from them financially.  He is a wonderful stepdad!

He decided a while back that he wanted to use donor sperm with IUI.  My OB/GYN prescribed clomid 100 mg on days 5-9 and then started monitoring my follicles.  My LH went positive on CD9 which has never happened before....I ALWAYS go positive on CD 12???  We figure it was a false positive.  So she scanned me and I had one lead follicle of 20mm and 4 that were 13-15mm.  She decided to wait on the HCG to give the other follicles time to grow.  So on Sunday (CD 11) all the follicles were greater than 15mm and we did the HCG at 6:30 am.  We did the IUI with donor sperm yesterday ( CD 12 ) at 1:00 pm.  My DH is so excited and nervous as am I.

Does anyone know the pregnancy rates with this approach?  I would love to hear your stories and words of wisdom.

  • Wow...maybe I don't understand all of it.......I thought all donor sperm was good count and very motile......This is our 1st attempt with donor sperm and I am still learning.

I used XYtex labs for our donor unit.  The count was 25mil/ml with 50% motility post thaw.  All their donors must meet a minimum of 25 mil/ml.  I'm not familiar with other labs though.  XYtex was who my RE recommended.  It is a little pricier, but for a better count, I'll take it!

The RE said that my husbands count was poor enough that IUI wouldn't ever work and even said that ICSI would be needed for IVF.  He did clomid for months, and that is what got the count up to 10mil, but only 1 mil were motile.  They said that all the ones that weren't swimming were blocking the path of the good swimmers.  The RE also said that he would have to have a total motile count of 8mil or greater to even be considered for IUI.  :(

  • I do not know too much about donor sperm but I just wanted to wish you luck!

  • Don't really have experience with donor sperm but hope it works out for you and welcome to the board!
Me 39 & suspected PCOS, DH 42. Went off BCP when we got married in 11/11, seriously TTC since 3/12.  Six cycles of clomid = BFNs.  Suspected endometriosis & HSG showed both tubes blocked.  Sept 2013 IVF 5D transfer of two perfect embryos = BFN.  Started acupuncture and taking time off to drop some pounds & get healthier before FET in April 2014.
