Hopefully
someone here can help me out......I am flying with my 3 year old this
week, and I can't get an answer as to if he needs to have ID. Anybody
have any info on this they would care to share?
I bring DDs birth certificate although I have never been asked for it. We've flown almost 10 times since she's was born. Actually our last trip on our way home I was frantically looking for her certificate and couldn't find it. Once we got home I realized I had left it home all along.
I've never been asked for it, either, but always bring their birth certificates just in case. When I was younger and traveling with my parents, the airline asked for my little sister's birth certificate and we didn't have it and it was a huge hassle. I don't remember what caused them to ask for it, but that memory has stuck with me and I keep them on hand just in case.
We've flown numerous times and have never been asked for any sort of id on flights within the US. But it can't hurt to bring along a copy of the birth certificate.
I recently flew on 4 different flights with my 12 yo DD and my 11 yo stepdaughter (SD). I took both of their birth certificates but was never asked to show it or any ID for them even though my DD has a different last name than my SD and I do. I would take something just in case though.
We've flown numerous times since my daughter was 3 months and only when it was international did we need ID (and then a passport). Have you checked the website of your airline? For example, United has their policy spelled out pretty clearly at https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/airport/id/travel.aspx.
The airlines have different policies. Call the customer service line for the airline that you are flying.
We recently flew on Frontier airlines with my 2 year old and no id was needed. I brought a copy of his birth certificate just in case and I was never asked for it.
We started flying with DD at 11 days and never brought an ID and were never asked for it (and we fly a lot but only on United). Kids under 18 do not need an ID (at least not on United). I could see bringing something if you have a lap child that is really big/tall for his/her age but once they have their own seat it shouldn't matter. I also have two SD who are now 18 and 20 and we are raising our 2 nieces who are 13 and 18. The only thing they ever ask is who is who and how old they are. Again, this is all on United.
Obviously if you fly internationally you need a passport.

If you travel international, you need a passport, not a birth certificate.
I've only been asked when flying with the boys as lap children. I know Southwest requires one for all lap children, even those obviously under 2.
