Did you have a growth sonogram?

I am experiencing sonogram envy.  My practice does not offer any sonograms unless there is an issue after 20 weeks which I realize is fairly common.  However, my girlfriend's practice offers a growth sonogram between 30-34 weeks to check on obviously that the baby is growing accordingly and to have an early warning if not all is as anticipated.

Are other ladies getting this awesome sonogram?

Re: Did you have a growth sonogram?

  • I had one at 34 or 35 weeks with my daughter and assume I will get one with this baby.  They are also great since they will check your fluid levels.

  • I will not be getting one. I didn't have one with DS either. Although I would love to see LO one more time, their measurements can be off by up to 2 lbs so I would take that into consideration if you do get one.

  • Yes, I'm getting one. Mine is scheduled for 34 weeks.

Like daronsmommy pointed out, I'm a little leery of the size prediction since they can be pretty inaccurate. But I'm super excited to see our little guy again!

  • I had one this time only because I changed practices (several times- military moving...) and they wanted to check on things themselves. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had one. I also had one with DS at an old practice because he was constantly measuring 3 weeks ahead and they do one if measurements are off from your EDD.

  • I am getting them every week due to GD.  My OB/GYN said that the results of the weight are sometimes not accurate though so if I did not have GD - I would not be having the growth scan

  • I am getting one this Thursday.  However, my DD had IUGR so I get extra monitoring just for this reason.  And we are watching this baby's kidneys too.  So I am not sure if my practice would do them for everyone.

  • In our area you go to a high risk specialist for all your sonograms. This being if you are high risk or not. I am not, but had to go there at 13 weeks, 20 weeks and 32 weeks. 32

  • No they don't do them at my practice. I had an ultrasound at 34 weeks because I failed a NST. They gave me no estimate of the size and just told me she scored an 8/8. Lol.

  • I won't be getting one.  My office does not offere then unless your fundal height is off by a lot, you have GD, or if they are concerned about baby not being head down by 36 weeks.

I'm jealous of all these ladies who do get one but I remind myself to be thankful I am not deemed by my OB to be 'at risk' for complications at this time.  Only a few more weeks until I meet baby any way -- I can hold out!

  • In our area you automatically go to a High Risk Specialist. This doesnt matter if you are high risk or not. I am not, but had to go there at 13, 20 and 32 weeks. it use to only be 13 and 20. Recently 32 weeks became  one. It is considered a growth scan, although they tell you that normally it is off on average of 1 lb either way. This little one is meausring 4lbs 10 ozs as of last Tuesdays scan. But like I said on avg it could be off by a lb. This would be the last one I get until 40 weeks. If I make it to my due date and don't deliver my OB/GYN will do on in there office. This is the only one I get done right in his office if any.

  • My practice routinely does a growth scan at 35/36 weeks.

However, I have had so many US this pregnancy it is just another one on the list - 8, 12, 28, 21, 30, and 35 weeks.

  • My OB does them for everyone in his practice whether you're high risk or not so yup I got one and it pretty much confirmed what I already knew: LO is a big one.  I know the measurements can be off so I'm taking what they told me with a grain of salt however I always had the feeling LO would be an over 8lbs baby and that's what they told me during the u/s.

It was awesome to see him again though.  His features have changed so much and I can honestly say I think he looks more like me than H.  We'll see once he comes out!

  • I had one at 32 weeks but I think it was more to check and make sure the baby was head down (she was breech at my 20 week apt).

  • My practice does not routinly do ultrasounds in the third tri, but I had one at 33 weeks because of my history of PTL with DS, and I was measuring small. Honestly, the anatomy scan was much better! The baby is taking up so much room in there that it was hard to see anything, and the picture I got was very blurry. If you don't need one, you're really not missing out on much!

  • I will have u/s #12 on Thursday.  It will be a fetal echo, Level II, growth u/s.  I HATE IT!  Please don't be envious - it sucks - it really really does.  Be grateful you are normal and enjoy your pregnancy without the extra stress.  :)

  • Yup I had one last week at 32 weeks. They estimated baby boy at 4lbs3oz and said my fluid levels were great. They also tried to get a shot of his face for us in 4d, but he had his hand in front--boo! :) Oh well, more of a surprise when he comes out I guess!

  • No more ultrasounds for me. Sad

Doc stated they would only do a growth ultrasound if I started measuring big...which I was 4 days ahead.

With DS, I had an ultra sound once a week (due to blood pressure) from 32w - end. Everyone keeps asking me how big she is and I have no idea.

  • Yep... I'm having mine today!  It seems to be a standard procedure with my practice.

  • I'll have one at 36 weeks but they dont' call it a growth scan. It is to confirm baby's position and get an estimate on size to assist doc with delivery.

  • With my first low risk - only at 20 wks.  With this LO I'm high risk and had growth us every few weeks.  Have another at 37 (fingers crossed I get there).  Though it is nice to see LO, a heart beat lets you know he is okay and I much rather have less ultrasounds.

  • This time I will be having one.  I had one at 26 weeks, 28 weeks, and now 32 weeks.  I have to go to the high risk specialist sonogram despite there being a regular sonogram downstairs at my regular OB.  Since baby was a surprise until 26 weeks, I'm 35, have had 3 c sections, and a complicated history in prior pregnancies(pre-e, pih, gd)I'm assuming I'll have to have more until I deliver.

  • I go in this Thursday at 36 weeks for one.  From what I can gather it is standard practice in my area.

  • I had one at 34 weeks, but it was to make sure she was head down. It was quick and I did not get any prints of images, etc., nor did I get an estimate of growth. Although I know my OB thinks I am huge, lol, and I am measuring ahead.

  • I have one scheduled for 34 weeks but that's only because they said that my uterus is larger than the gestational age.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I didn't have one with my first two but with this one I got some extras because first checking the placenta location, which was low at my 20 week, and then following up on growth because the measurements were a little off at my placenta ultrasound.
    image
  • I've had two...I would have much rather I didn't though!  They only did them because they where concerned she wasn't growing and the stress the caused me was def not worth it!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I had growth scans every 3 weeks with DS, starting at 20w, because I was high risk & the docs were concerned about placental breakdown.  He was always fine.

I've had 2 growth scans this time around, just to monitor that the same high-risk issues aren't popping back up.  My doc has mentioned possibly doing a 3rd, but I'm going to decline unless my bump is measuring really off since my c/s is in 4 weeks.

  • Because of a slight complication and new research suggesting them, I've been getting growth u/s every 4 wks since 12 wks. It's nice knowing I get to see him 1x a month. But quite frankly, I'm getting sick of paying for them. :p
