Question for those who have started some form of solids.

Have you noticed any changes in LO's sleeping patterns since you started giving them something rather than just milk/formula? DS has woken up at least 2 times per night for the past 3 months. Sunday, ds had oatmeal for the first time and he only woke up once. Then last night he actually slept through the night! He only had the oatmeal twice now, but I wasn't sure if this is merely a fluke or if the oatmeal really is helping this sleep longer.

  • I haven't noticed a difference but every baby is different! Plus we've been dealing with other sleep issues like teething, deswaddling and crib transition so that sure doesn't help!

  • When they've been spoon-fed, there's no way mine ate enough of it for it to matter. When I put rice cereal in their bottles to help with reflux, it didn't change their sleep, either. Etta still gets up for a MOTN feed at 3am. Hubby's convinced it's just a habit for her at this point, and she doesn't really need to eat then, but these are the only babies I get, and one day they won't need me in the middle of the night, so I feed her.

  • He moved his MOTN feeding from 3 am to 5 am.

  • Like Ernie said, I doubt L is getting enough from being spoon fed for it make a difference. BUT I have noticed that he's starting to sleep longer again (we went through a bit of a sleep regression the last few weeks where he was waking up every 2-3 hours again), I doubt it's from eating the oatmeal though. Your DS might just be ending the phase he was in, babies are ever-changing!

  • We haven't started solids yet. Can I ask how much oatmeal you gave him? (and did you give it to him at night)? I hope it's not a fluke for you! You're making me want to give it a try!

You start with 1 tablespoon oatmeal with 4-5 tablespoons of BM/formula. Then you slowly add less liquid to make it thicker. Once that's enough for them, you can up the serving of oatmeal (a full serving is 4 tablespoons).

I first breastfed him until he was done, then I offered the oatmeal. I did it around 7 and he normally goes to bed a bit after 8. I was suprised how much he liked it. He was leaning into every bite and everything. I didn't really measure to be honest I just kinda mixed breastmilk and some oatmeal together until it seemed to be the right thickness. I'm guessing he ate close to a cup's worth of oatmeal. I got the Happy Bellies brand, https://www.happybabyfood.com/ourproducts?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=63&category_id=16. I gave him more yesterday than the day before. I'll have to tell you how he does tonight with it. I really hope he keeps it up!

  • Nope, no change. In fact, I've noticed he's sleeping like crap (compared to what he was). I'm guessing its the 4mw.
  • I started DD on cereal/oatmeal almost 1 week ago.  It might be a fluke, but she's down to 1 MOTN feed instead of 2 since starting solids.  Granted, I'd probably jinxed myself.  Although, Saturday night she slept like poo, but she's been more congested recently.

  • Her sleeping at night has always been amazing, but nap time is becoming more difficult. I don't believe that this is because of introducing solids.

  • Cereal definitely helped my DS. He went from waking up multiple times/night to waking between 4-5 am. It took only a few days of cereal for this to happen.
