Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this? I just learned my good friend who is carrying twins had to have surgery for this about a week ago. The surgery worked and the twins are OK for now but she's on bed rest. I  think she's about 30 weeks. I am a little freaked out because I just watched a "Baby's first day" where there was a lady carrying triplets and she lost two of the babies due to this. Anyone have any experience or positive stories with this syndrome?

 Thanks

Re: Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome

  • I have 2 friends who dealt with TTTS during their pregnancies, one had the surgery and one did not need to have it. The one who had the surgery had a severe case and delivered at 31 weeks and while it was a long road, her girls are now 3 y/o and healthy. The other one just had to be monitored very closely and when the discordance between the babies became unsafe, they delivered her at 34 weeks and her boys are also now 3 and healthy. While it's scary, with proper care, hopefully her twins will be born healthy and go on to lead normal lives. It's very encouraging that she's already 30 weeks, as that is an important milestone to pass. Best of luck to her...twin pregnancies can be so scary! :(

  • I recommend posting this to the Multiples board. Thankfully I don't have any experience with TTTS with my twins, but a lot of the ladies on that board have experienced it or done a lot of research on it. You'll get some great responses there.

  • Thank you this is reassuring. Her cervix has also shortened so they are pretty sure she will be delivering quite early. Also I'll check out the multiples board.

  • My aunt had this and her twins were born super early and she was told there wasn't much of a chance for either of them because of how early they were. The twin that was not getting enough nutrients ended up having problems with his eyes because of the oxygen and medications he needed in the incubator.

They are now 21 years old. The 'healthier' twin is about to graduate college, and the 'sicker' twin has taken time off from college to figure out what he wants to do and to compose piano music. He cannot see very well, but he has an amazing ear and composes beautiful music.  Both had difficulties in school, mostly due to the 'normal' difficulties preemies often face, but they both worked hard and made it through.

  • I just talked to her - turns out she is only 25 weeks. I told her I'd heard some stories of twins with this, and very early premies doing OK and it made her feel better. I guess at this point early delivery is the greater danger. Times like this I wish I was religious so I could pray for her.
