Possible to Miss Your Water Breaking?

I have heard that water breaking can be a lot or a little.  Is it possible to miss my water breaking?  Sorry if this is TMI, but at this point it seems like I am wet all the time.  And at this point I am worried about missing it because I know you only have 24 hours to deliver once that happens.  Any insight or experience is greatly appreciated!  Thank You.

Re: Possible to Miss Your Water Breaking?

  • I feel the same way. Would I notice it if I were going to the bathroom or in the shower? Or how about the fact that I have woken up in a puddle of what I think is sweat twice now!?

  • Breaking would/should be pretty obvious after a while, if you lay on your side for about 10-25 minutes & then stand up and are wet like you peed yourself...chances are your water broke.

If you're leaking, it could be harder to tell.  If you're ever concerned call or go to the hospital (unless doctor has another plan) and have them do a test on it.

  • I had a water breaking scare a few weeks ago. I was really wet and I went through like 3 pads in an hour. I went to the labor deck to be checked. They did a swab to see if it was indeed AF, and it turns out it wasn't, and it was just extra discharge. (It's Tuesday, so share all the TMI's you want lol)

If you're concerned you can be checked, but it's probably nothing. You can also do the sniff test. If it doesn't smell like urine, then you should call the doctor.

  • Oh if it's anything like my experience, you won't miss it. The nurse even told me, I'd be leaking through the sheets until birth. She was right. I had a slow leak at first but while at the hospital I heard the pop followed by tons of water. I have no idea where all the water kept coming from. It was a lot!

  • My mom didn't realize that her water broke when she had me. It was just a lot of wetness, but that's nothing new to pregnancy. She was having contractions and walking around, so I guess it just didn't gush. Once labor picked up, she went to the hospital and the dr told her that her water had broken.

I was leaking and didn't have a clue. I leaked out over 3-4 days and it was discovered at a BPP, I was induced that evening.

Rora...did you feel like your bump was smaller during all of that??  I can't tell if I'm smaller because he's dropped a lot or if I'm losing AF.   Or it may be all in my head and I'm still as big as a house and DH is too smart to say anything.

  • dh keeps trying to get me to go swimming but I'm being irrational and saying that my water will break while I'm in the pool and won't know it. lets face it, the chances of this happening are minuscule... gotta love the things we worry about lol

  • If you're really concerned, call the dr -- it's a weekday so maybe they can just do a quick check for you in the office. With DD, I didn't have a lot of water, but it definitely felt "different" - I was sitting on the couch, and said "what is that feeling?," stood up and walked a bit and then felt the bottom of my panties wet through. That was about it though. But the chances of 1) your water breaking before you go into labor AND 2) you not knowing it AND 3) labor not starting within a few hours afterward are so slim, try not to worry.

Same thing happened to me with DD, except after 4 days of getting progressively worse (I thought it was discharge) my OB told me to go to L&D to get checked out.

This happened to my friend.  Well, she was actually taking a bath, not swimming, and she was already in labor/having contractions.  She said she took three baths over several hours before going to L&D where they discovered her water had already broken.  She had no idea.
