LO will be 10 months in 4 days. He was 22lbs at his 9 month check up about 3 weeks ago. He was EBF till 8 months old and then started 75% BM and 25% formula.
He now gets about the same in BM and formula. I nurse him evening and mornings (and overnight if needed). I wrote down all the bottles and nursing times yesterday. I feel like he's taking a lot of ounces and it's going to be hard to cut back. He has 10 teeth. He loves table food and will eat pretty much anything we are eating plus some purees. The upper canine teeth are coming through so I think he's having a hard time eating his table food right now.
Here is the schedule he had yesterday:
4:00am nurse
7:15 bottle 6oz
10:15 bottle 6oz
1:30 bottle 6 oz
4:30 nurse
7:15 bottle 6 oz
9:15pm bottle at bedtime 8oz (sucks it down)
3:30am nurse
6:30am bottle 6oz
Because my supply is low, I can generally nurse him 2-3 times per 24 hour period. But it makes me wonder if he is getting the same amount of oz when he nurses. I know he must get close to it since he will still go 3 hours between the nursing session and the next bottle. I've tried stretching him longer but he won't do it. I've also tried to up his solids but he won't do that either.
From 4am yesterday till 4am this morning he had 34 ounces just in bottles...that doesn't even include nursing. At his checkup, he finally moved into the 50% for weight....he had always been in the 25%.
Re: How many ounces is too many at this age?
I don't know if this helps or answers your question, but our pediatrician said that DS had to be down to no more than 24oz of formula (we FF only) by 1 year of age. He said that usually babies will wean themselves by refusing extra formula and not finishing bottles.
I know back when I was EPing I never knew how much BM/F DS should get. He would never tell me when he's full-he always just keep taking whatever I give him! One sign that I did have that he was getting too much was that he was spitting up a lot. Once we cut down on the BM/F he did just fine and hardly spits up at all anymore.
Hope this helps!
Baby Boy #2 is on the way!
DS is drinking about 29 oz a day.
Correction: 29 oz in a 24 hour period.
Our boys were eating about 32 oz per day (4 bottles x 8 oz each) at their 9 month checkup, and the pediatrician asked us to cut it back a bit because they weren't eating much finger / real food. One kid was actually usually not even finishing his 8 oz bottles so when we cut back to 6 oz per bottle he was fine, the other kid cries when it's finished, but BOTH of them are definitely eating more table food now.
The goal is not to starve them, but just to start getting them used to eating table food more and more so that as they approach one year, they will be ready to slowly drop the formula altogether and get their nutrition from food. Talk to your pediatrician about it.
That does seem like a lot. My DS takes 24 oz in 24 hours, usually 4 6 oz bottles. This weekend we switched to 3 bottles and gave a sippy cup with formula at mealtimes. He is a kiddo that loves table food though and the bottle has been a fight for the past few months.
