Natural Birth

STM: Don't think I'll make it to my DD!

Hey everyone!

I'm 35 weeks pregnant, due October 5th. My first son was born in 2009, where I had a hospital birth. I went into labor naturally, had some back pain that slowly became constant, lost my plug and went to the hospital just to be checked out and ended up already being 5 cms. 8 hours later, my son was born, right on his due date.

He was a big baby, MUCH bigger then we thought he'd be. He was just over 9 pounds, and seeing as I'd only gained 12 pounds during pregnancy and had this tiny little baby bump, we were thinking he'd be more like 6-7 pounds.

This pregnancy I was really sick in the beginning (like with my other son) and have also hardly gained weight. I've tried pretty damn hard too! My belly is a bit bigger this time around at 35 weeks, and I'm WAY more uncomfortable this time. I'm told 2nd pregnancies can be like that, and that your body tends to take things harder.

This baby has already dropped and engaged in my pelvis, and his movements are HUGE compared to my last pregnancy. He doesn't seem to have a lot of room left, so he mostly just "tents" and sticks his bum and feet out CONSTANTLY. I think this one will also be a big baby, I'm expecting more then my first. Seeing as this is my second time, I've started noticing tiny little things about my body that are indicating I'm getting ready for having a baby. I've started getting more of a back ache that was similar to how my labor started with my 1st, but only when I've been on my feet too long. Otherwise, I almost can't even describe how else I feel, I just feel "off".

I'm planning a waterbirth at home, and I have my midwife appointment next week when they come to check out my house to make sure it's safe for a homebirth, so I plan on of course mentioning this "feeling" then too. But I just can't shake the feeling that I'm not going to make it to my due date. It's like a gut feeling.

Just wondering if any other mom's felt the same? What small little things did you feel?

.....Now watch, I've posted this and my luck will be I end up 2 weeks overdue. Lol.

Re: STM: Don't think I'll make it to my DD!

  • During my first pregnancy I had a nagging feeling that I was going to have him a couple weeks early and ended up going into labor and giving birth exactly two weeks before my due date.

Instincts are very strong during pregnancy and if you feel like you're not going to make it, then you most likely won't. Trust yourself and be prepared early.

  • Both of my kids came at exactly 37 weeks (not induced- my 2nd stayed in exactly 1 hour longer).  With the first, being a first timer I saw none of the signs that he was coming (Iooking back its obvious).  The 2nd time around I started to see the signs but disregarded it because I didn't want to get antsy at 37 weeks and delay the birth.  This is our 3rd and of course everyone (midwife included) is under the impression it will come at @ 37 weeks.  My midwife doesn't even use my 40 week "due date".  In fact she said she's going to do a 36 week home visit vs. her standard 37 week home visit since I've never had a home visit before.  But because of this, I always joke that this baby will probably arrive at 42 weeks.

Its not a good answer but I think you just have to remember (as you've been told a trillon times), each baby is different and it will come on its own time.  I personally feel if you start looking for signs, you're going to find them.  So just enjoy whatever time you have left.  I have been told (it its accurate for my midwife's clients) that most subsequent babies of natural birth mamas come after the children have went to sleep since that's when mothers are most comfortable giving birth.

  • Thanks so much :)

I think I'm just so anxious to have my homebirth experience (and be done being prego, I'm NOT a happy prego lady!) so half of my "instinct" or "gut feeling" is that I just want this baby out! I'm trying to just stay relaxed and and not google "early signs of labor" like I did a million times with my first pregnancy. I'm much more at ease this time around compared to last time, and this pregnancy has FLOWN by compared to my first.... probably has something to do with chasing around a busy toddler every single day!

Whatever happens, I just hope things go smoothly :)

I had no instincts telling me one way or the other with my first but from the time I got pregnant with my second I kept saying that I was going to go early. But I thought by a week or so. She surprised everyone when she came at 37w 6 days. So much so that I didn't have a car seat (not that it wasnt in the car, I didn't have one period) or anything else ready!  So, I agree that you should have everything ready just in case!
  • My first was born one-day shy of his due date, but my second was born closer to 37 weeks. It was so nice skipping those last few weeks of pregnancy, but also my youngest has much more vunerable lungs (colds go straight to his lungs and we keep a nebulizer around for a common cold, etc.) so I also hope this next one waits off a little - not that his lungs would have been any different then, I just always wondered - and he is growing out of using the nebulizer for every cold/cough.

I too have already dropped and feel pelvis pressure, but I didn't feel that with either of my other ones, so I'm not sure if that means early or just being more uncomfortable longer.

If anything I hope you don't go over the DD and coming at 38 weeks isn't so bad IMO!

Two boys already - ages 5 and 3...

    ...baby #3 is here...

  • My DD was born at 39 weeks 3 days, and I felt sure my second would come even earlier.  I had a lot of BH contractions, false labor, etc. but he ended up coming at 41 weeks on the nose!  Every pregnancy is different :)

  • #1 came at 37 weeks exactly.

#2 came at 40w6d.  He had dropped and I had been having prodromal labor for three weeks before he finally arrived.

#3 came on her due date despite a few weeks of intense contractions.

    You never know!
