Getting her off the bottle!

So I'm not sure where you all are, but I feel like I should be getting my LO off the bottle and I'm failing!  I can do naps wo the bottle, but morning she will not take a sippy or straw cup with milk but drinks the whole bottle.  I feel like her getting the nutrition is more important than not using a bottle?

How did you all transition from the bottle?  I'll be sad but I know it's what i have to do!

Re: Getting her off the bottle!

  • When I first started trying the transition, I was expecting that he'd get his milk at the same times as the bottle but just that he'd just get it in a sippy cup. That was a big fail. Then I talked to my mom and my sister who said that I just needed to offer his milk with his meals/snacks and let him drink what he wanted throughout the day. I generally fill two 8 ounce sippy cups throughout the day. Doing it that way, he gets at least 16 ounces a day (plus other dairy). He gets water in between meals/snacks (or instead of milk if he's not interested). If I feel like he has not had all of his milk, I'll offer him a small bottle at bedtime but that only happens a couple times a week max.  Some people have said they don't offer it with meals because their child would fill up  on the milk instead of eating but we haven't had that issue.  He's definitely more interested in the food.

  • Nutritionally your LO doesn't have to drink milk. There are other ways to provide your child dairy. My DD hates milk & only drinks it if I mix in some Vanilla Pediasure, which is a good idea for her since she is very small & could stand some weight gain. She also won't drink even that out of her regular sippy cups. She would only take it from the bottle until I gave her one of those take & toss sippys and now she loves that.

I would just do what the pp mentioned. I understand you wanting your LO to have some milk as I did too but also wanted you to know that you don't need to stress yourself about it. I would just remove the bottle, try different cups and your LO will eventually do it.

  • We stopped bottle during the day when she was one... she had problem doing milk in a sippy. All meals and snacks, water during play time...  BUT we do milk in a bottle at bedtime.

  • So our ped told us to get lo off the bottle at 12 months.  She just had her 16 month appt and she is still on the bottle.  We were told to do it now!  This past weekend we took away her day bottles and only do a morning and evening bottle.  She won't drink milk out of a sippy cut, but she will drink water...weird!  The pediatrician told us that she won't starve and that she will eventually drink out of the sippy.  WE noticed that she ate more food at meals, though!

  • Cold turkey! It might take a couple days , but just take the bottle away! Keep offering the soppy. I gave flavored milk for a couple of days. I know some people are very much against it, but it worked for us. Even putting a little ovaltine in the milk would get him to drink his sippy! Then I just started giving regular milk after a couple days.

This cup is what worked for us, and we tried several.  Now he'll take it in any cup, but this was a good in between.

  • Fruit smoothies in a straw sippy.

Abigail is so thin and had lost weight at her 15 month appointment so the pedi didn't care how I got calories in her.  She loves fruit, so I'd throw random frozen fruit in the blender with a cup of milk.  Not only did it get her off the bottle, she drank a lot more than plain milk.
