potty training issue

hi my daughter is 3 1/2 years old. we've been working on potty training since she turned 3 last Feb. However , i can not get her to poop on the potty no what i do.  i have tried everything. she basically asks for a diaper when she needs to go. my dr said to take the diapers away. my concern is that she will get constipated. he said to give her 1/2 capful of miralax if she goes 3 days without going.  i don't know what i should do. she is obviously scared to go on the potty and i do not want to traumatize her but it's been 7 months already. i need to add that at this point she will only go at home and only in a diaper and pajama pants. she says that she's afraid it will come out and thats why she insists on having pajama pants on. i think she had a couple accidents in the past that came out of the diaper and thats why she asks for pants. anyways, any recommendations would be appreciated. thanks

Re: potty training issue

  • I would switch to pullups and keep them in the bathroom and for a week put it on her in the bathroom and tell her she can poop in it but must stay in the bathroom.  Praise and focus on how poop is a bathroom thing and belongs in the bathrrom only.  Stay with her or leave her- whatever she wants, praise.

When she does that without anxiety, tell her she must go in alone, put the pullup on by herself, poop and call you when she's done.  Praise and a slightly bigger reward.

Then when she gets that, require sitting on the potty for 1 minute before getting the pullup.  When this is okay, increase the time on the timer that she sits on the potty before getting the pull up.  Increase the reward.

The point is slowly desensitizing her.  WHen she is on the potty, you can make it fun, feed her treats... if you have an iphone or something portable, take away her very favorite show and only let her watch it while she is on the potty and after successful pooping.

The obvious last step would be taking away the show after she's had some success until she's pooped on the potty.

    Good luck.

  • My son was the same way.  We went directly from diapers to underwear and he would always poop in them.  We watched him like a hawk to try to catch him in the process, but boy was he sneaky.  Finally we caught him squeezing, rushed him to the potty and the tiniest poop I've ever seen came out.  We had a celebration!  Then, we started him on miralax daily, read some poppy books and celebrated every time with songs and 2 m and ms.  I think the miralax did it.  Within a week of starting miralax, he was trained.
  • I would relax. My oldest was the same way, he would go at nap time or right before bed time when he was put in his training pants. Once I relaxed and stopped making it such a big deal, he started asking for the potty for poops. He was in underwear, except when sleeping.
